Ask An Expert: Tommy, I'm Fit But I Still Have Love Handles! Please Help!
Q: Hi Tommy! First of all, I love your 2 shows and watch them consistently and get some great ideas for new exercise routines. I am an active person who goes to the gym 5-6 times a week. I do 30 minutes of cardio every day and some type of weight resistance every other day. I weigh 130 pounds and am 5’6. My measurement are chest 35, waist 28 and hips 38. My issue are my love handles and my hips. What kind of exercise can you suggest for me to do? ~ Thanks, Julie
A: Hi Julie! Thanks for tuning into the shows, and just wait… If you loved the previous episodes of The Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp & Bulging Brides, then season 6 of The Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp is really going to impress you!
It looks like you are very active, and add a lot of variety to your routine, so let’s see if we can tweak this thing a little bit. The fact that you include resistance and cardiovascular training is great, the only thing I see missing from your weekly routine are your eating habits. Believe it or not, there are a lot of fitness fanatics who do everything right, except when it comes to nutrition. This could be a reason for carrying a little “extra” around the middle. Over the last few years working on Bulging Brides and The Last 10 Pounds Bootcamp, I’ve had the pleasure to learn a lot about nutrition from our Registered Dietitian and fellow “Ask an Expert” columnist, Maria Thomas, at Urban Nutrition.
I would suggest at your height and weight, you should be consuming somewhere between 1700-2000 calories per day. You are very active and need to meet your bodies requirements to push forward. Your meals should be split into 5 servings per day, and I don’t have to tell you to avoid, fatty, refined and sugary foods.
Once you have your diet under control, some exercises that would help you out would include wood choppers, side plank, lateral jumps or leg raises, and the list goes on. Basically you need to incorporate rotational exercises that will target your soft zones. Vary your speed of movement and focus all of your attention to the muscles being worked. Throw those moves into a circuit along with your regular workouts, aiming for about 15-20 repetitions and watch that 5’6 130lb frame soar to new heights.
