Ask An Expert: Tommy, I Used To Be An Athlete, Now I Need Help!
Q: Hi Tommy, My name is Julie and I'm 35 years old, I always did some sort of exercises. (pilates, P90X etc).
I used to be ripped 2 years ago, I slowed down 2 years ago due to construction in my house and a knee problem, but now I have a hard time just doing basic exercises I get exhausted after just 20-30 minutes. I try to do Insanity but nope I had to give up after just 20 minutes, I was humiliated. I try to eat well and I do control portions but nothing. I try to do cardio 3 hrs a week and the same with weight training but I can't seem to be able to get back to my old nice ripped body why?????
Please help! Thank you! ~ Julie
A: Hi Julie! Thank you for your question.
First things first, keep your head up! Two years is a long time to be inactive, add an injury into the mix and the situation is further complicated. However, this is not the time to throw in the towel, it is time to refocus and do things the right way. There are a large number of “inactive/unhealthy” people, that just decide to get into shape, and then they pick a workout like the p90 or Insanity workout. Those two workouts are great, but they are also highly demanding!
Start out slow and hit the gym 3-4 days per week for 30 minute sessions. That way it is manageable, and as you have already realized… You can get pooped in 20-30 minutes.
Focus on full body workouts inside / or out, to make your body a lean, mean, calorie burning machine! When it comes to cardio, interval training is your best option, because it is time efficient, and burns more calories in less time.
Nutrition is also an important, yet often overlooked element. Make sure you are fueling your body the way it needs to be.
Stop asking why, and instead ask why not! You can’t change the past, so don’t try to look like you “use to look”, try and look better.
I hope this helps you and others who are in the same predicament; a little planning goes a long, long way. If you really want it, YOU CAN DO IT!
