Episode 3027: Red and Jonny
Newlywed, Nearly Dead? host Gary Direnfeld shares his thoughts each
week and so can you! Let us know what you think. Please note: Gary will

There’s no denying it: Red and Jonny are possibly the sweetest and funniest couple I have ever met, but that sweetness and humour were a real problem in their relationship.
Red never wanted to say anything bad about or to Jonny, so she sugarcoated everything that made her sad or mad and buried her feelings about Jonny’s peeves. Yes, she was protecting Jonny, but she was hurting herself.
Jonny, on the other hand, is a joker at heart: everything’s a laugh to Jonny, even hurting his wife. Here’s a husband who gets a kick out of throwing away toothpaste lids and watching his wife’s frustration.
I really felt that Jonny and Red’s behaviour was childish and destructive to their marriage and when I showed them the evidence, I let them know exactly that! Needless to say, it didn’t go over so well, especially with Jonny. He took major offense at being told that he and Red had to grow up.
One thing that you didn’t see on the show is that Red and Jonny are Star Wars fanatics: they dress up like characters from the films and have a huge Star Wars toy collection. Jonny and Red thought that I was saying that they were immature based solely on their hobby and that really got their backs up.
So when I left after the evidence I wasn’t sure that Jonny and Red would take any of the challenges seriously, but they did. Don’t get me wrong, they were as quirky as ever during challenge week, but they started to take each other’s peeves a little more seriously. Red was able to be honest and open with what she wanted Jonny to do, and Jonny, out of respect for his wife, stopped acting like a bratty kid.
