Fashion Fails: Worst Celebrity Looks of the Week

Nine times out of ten I’m so in love with what Diane Kruger is wearing it feels like she can do no wrong. This, friends, is that one rare time when I'm not into it. The colour is obviously beautiful on her, and had she chosen wisely with those silver accessories? Yes! But the proportions of this part T-shirt, part fancy mesh, part princess skirt dress are odd at best. And this certainly is not her best look of the year to date. (For that, one must seek out her sizzling red jumpsuit worn to the Vanity Fair Oscar after party. Prepare to be amazed.) Had the opaque top part continued down into a sleek sheath, with some subtle lacy detail and that silver belt, I might have been on board.

Fashion is such fickle business. Only a week ago Margot Robbie was on every Oscar best-dressed list, and then this happened. The flowery bust, the wide white sash, and the sheer skirt that reveals black briefs underneath–it’s all too much. The best black and white dresses lean into simplicity, which is what this look failed to do. A thinner belt that elongated her mid-section would have been a good place to start.

I get it, Lily, really I do. Sometimes you just want to throw on a fashionable muumuu for a party. And while I love the colour of this dress, and I like the high low cut of the flowing skirt, the top half isn’t quite fashionable enough. My quick fix would have been to throw a couple of long pendant necklaces on the model/actress to elongate her proportions and up the chic factor.

I applaud Gwendoline’s fearless sense of fashion–I just wish she would use her powers for good. This drapey multi-coloured cape looks far too much like a costume. The ruby red lip, polka dot stockings and pointy toe heels are on the right ladylike track, but the dress needs to be reduced in volume and reined in to give her frame a stronger sense of shape.

With "no hassle" icons emblazoned over her chest, it’s clear where Pixie stands on body harassment. I just wish there was a chicer way for the British socialite and fashion lover to convey her message rather than this beyond basic tank dress, layered over a long sleeve tee no less. Why not elevate to educate? I’d like to see it in something luxe, like sequins.

Is it just me or does the middle portion of AnnaLynne’s gown look like a completely different colour and fabric that the top and skirt? Even if my eyes are playing tricks on me, I’m still not in love with this look. It’s missing an effortless merger between the architectural top and more formal, mermaid skirt bottom. Given the actresses boyish frame, I would have liked to see her in something with a softer, more romantic vibe.

Military-inspired style is trending for spring, but not quite the way singer M.I.A. has interpreted it. There are oodles of edgy army-type jackets that I’d like to see her in rather than this outfit that appears like she’s belted herself into an old army sack. Then I’d lose the thigh high socks in favour of a cool pair of pants but, surprise, keep the silver shoes. The shimmering loafers are a chic counterpoint to the casual tone of military looks.

It’s hard for me not to like a sequin dress but this one, which features reversible sequins, looks like it’s been nibbled on by mice and that’s never a good look.

Reversible sequins are a fun idea, you can flip them back and forth to create unique patterns and textures, but as we can see they can be problematic on something like a dress. Plus, with those hints of gold peeking through, I’m not even sure this dress has been "flipped" to the best possible colour option. The American Crime star would have fared better in a traditional sequin dress that had no risk of being mussed up with her every move.

Braided hair ‘do? Check. Pile of ornate jewels? Check. Capelet? Check. While all those elements have a place in a modern style, when worn all together, like British model/musician Mary Charteris, the result can make you look like an extra who has stepped off the set of a period drama. Go ahead and pull out all the stops for Halloween, until then stop at wearing two of those details at any one time.

Is it the extra strappy bustier, nearly neon green hue or thigh high slit that prevents me from liking this look? I can’t quite put my finger on it but something about this ultra-sexy get-up is little too forced. Perhaps that’s because I think Taylor looks best when she’s showing a bit of her sweet side. Devoid of a romantic element, like loose waves or a dainty heel, this one fails to hit a high note.

Gasp! It appears as if the Pretty in Pink star is rebelling against wearing colour. Besides being a light tan that does nothing for her peachy complexion, this style of this dress feels dated and a tad juvenile, and dare we say junior prom, for Molly. Something like a crisp white cotton lace dress would have come across as fresh and fabulous on the '80s teen movie icon. The good news: the mixed metallic accessories can stay!

The shoes? To die for. The dress? It’s killing me. Between the structured shoulder, glossy satin, asymmetrical skirt and crinoline there are a lot of big "look at me" elements working hard in this little black dress and I don’t particularly like any of them. Let’s go back to Ali’s heels and take our cue from there, shall we? She would have killed it in an LBD of a more minimalist style.

This is an "almost dress." As in I almost like it. But that giant drape of fabric is holding me back. The idea of it is strong, but it’s the execution of proportions that makes it fall flat. A shorter drape would have been more polished for Katie, as would heels with angular lines.

After delivering the best speech of the Oscars, Boyhood star and feminist hero Patricia can really do no wrong…except when it comes to accessorizing. Point blank: this pendant necklace is too ornate, too big and the length of the chain too long for her wonderfully curvy figure. I’d swap it out for a necklace with sleeker lines and one that rests higher up on her chest.

There's a good way and a bad way a jumpsuit can be jaw-dropping and, sadly, Gwendoline’s is not the good way. The top half starts out strong but below the waist things get baggy and bunchy. A more tailored fit from hips to hem, and much shorter cuffs, are desperately needed on the actress. And the finishing touch that could help this look cross over? More delicate footwear. Strappy sandals would be my first choice.

I will always be a fan of bold prints and I even like mixing them together but Chloe’s dress gets the thumbs down because it breaks the scale rule. The rule: one print should be bigger in scale than the other. The prints here are too similar, there’s some great shape to the dress but you can’t really see it because of the mess of prints. To create a balanced frock for the star I’d replace the bottom half with a graphic that boasted cleaner lines.

If you’re going to step out in a snakeskin garment you’d better be sure the fit is fierce. This matching top and pants ensemble on dancer/TV personality Peta has a beautiful one-shoulder top but the hem is too long and the pants could use a nip and a tuck. Trousers with a trim fit would have balanced out the voluminous top. And the white heels are too stark with the muted tones here. A bronze pair would have been a suitable hit of glitz.

A large-scale motif can easily overtake the woman wearing it and that’s what happened to Ellie. With its grand swirling pattern and voluminous A-line shape, the dress looks like it’s wearing the songstress instead of the other way around. And the blush hue against her bronzed skin isn’t necessarily my favourite either. I’d love to see her in something sleeker and in jewel tones, like emerald green or a rich amethyst shade.

If it weren’t for the high over-sized collar this dress would be a ladylike win on Linda. But that one detail is really pulling focus and weighing down the whole look. A more open neckline, such as a sweetheart or off the shoulder cut, would have worked best for the star and been more youthful, too.

When Kim appeared at NY fashion week wearing a cocoa body stocking I thought things couldn’t get worse. Boy, was I wrong! The platinum hair is one thing, but I can’t get passed this flesh-toned mesh dress. Worn sans bra, but of course. Has the Kim who flaunted her fab figure in ladylike midi pencil skirts gone forever? I’d give anything for the good old days. So over these shenanigans as the woman redefines the phrase "it costs a lot of money to look this cheap" with every outing.
