Fashion Fails: Worst Celebrity Looks of the Week

We applaud Kim for being a supportive wifey, but her hubby-designed get-up worn to the adidas Originals x Kanye West YEEZY SEASON 1 fashion presentation was something we’d divorce ASAP. Save for the camo-print jacket, the high-waisted chocolate brown spandex leggings as pants, sheer brown turtleneck top layered under a grey bra top looked like a Jane Fonda 1980s aerobic session reject, complete with chunky socks. This is a shocking disservice to any woman, much less Kim’s famous curves. Can we get some real pants, please, and nix the body stocking look?

With her vertiginous height, Nicole Kidman should be able to pull off just about anything. But not this dress. The seamed detail over the bust, torso and scooped waistline bisect her body at odd points, and the frilly sleeves are far too busy. Plus, I’m not crazy about the degree of sheerness in the front panel. Can we get more of the pleated, beaded skirt and sleeves from the elbows up, and less of everything else?

Legendary '60s-era fashion model Veruschka has surely worn a lot of crazy things in her life while working in front of the camera, but this get-up is all her own doing. To streamline the eccentricity a bit, we’d lose the fringed headpiece, and then opt for more fitted black layers underneath the metallic shawl and swap in a sleeker pair of shoes.

Not one to play it safe on the red carpet, the Game of Thronesstar has been making a name for herself in daring fashion looks. But a jumpsuit spliced with jailhouse orange goes a step too far to looking costume-y. The fit of this jumpsuit would have been stellar in solid black, but we get the colour block accent and any other deep colour here (red, green, blue) would have been better.

The award-winning actress who wowed us most recently in Big Eyes usually nails it in a softly coloured gown, but the bunchy fit has a twisted toilet paper effect that raised our eyebrows. A sleeker skirt might have salvaged this dress. But those sparkling shoes? They can do no wrong.

While Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie is almost unrecognizable out of her Brienne of Tarth garb, the missteps in this outfit can't be missed. Acid green is a tough colour for most, and adding pops of purple and coral makes it even more jarring on the eyes. Let’s trade the bright shades for jewel tones, shall we? Emerald green would be right up the alley for her peaches and cream complexion.

Shaking things up on the red carpet is key, but the Netherlands star shook a little too vigorously with this one. Fringe jacket, plus a bright hue, plus kooky footwear is a lot to take in. A cropped fit jacket and ladylike heels would have balanced things out while still being unexpected.

Better known as Arya Stark on Game of Thrones, we sense this starlet has great sartorial potential. But she’s not there just yet. Today’s lesson is all about matching hues, when they’re needed and when they’re not. Here, choosing the same colour in the skirt and high heels is a major misstep that draws our eyes immediately to her shoes. Trading them for black booties would have been a quieter accent that maintained the rocker chic vibe of this look.

The Big C’s Laura Linney gets a big C grade for this outfit. Building off the base of those wide leg black trousers, we’d choose a sleeker black and white top tor even a fitted leather jacket to boost her mark.

One part A-list star, one part B-list wannabe, the beading on the top half of this dress is jaw-dropping but below the belt this look goes off the rails. The high sheen skirt with smattering of beads looks chintzy, while a skirt in solid red, even tiny pleats, would have continued the luxe look from head to toe.

Colour is always welcome on the red carpet, but British actress Romola Garai may have splashed out in one too many at once. Worn together, the blousy top plus A-line midi skirt come across as a tad dowdy and then the shoes are a harsh reinforcement of the colour palette. A sleeveless top to create fitted proportions on the top half, and neutral shoes would have been our first choice.

As a Canadian, I know that the challenge of cold weather dressing gets taken to the next level when you’ve got a special occasion to attend. But I’m not sure throwing a fur stole over a floor length gown is the best solution. The colour and cut of Rachel Riley’s stole completely detracts from the gown underneath. And was this the only option given the off the shoulder fit of her dress? Going the distance with a fur (real or otherwise) cropped jacket would have been chicer and warmer.

A bounty of tulle can be a dream come true and on the tailoring side of things, this gown is tops. It’s the colour that is irksome. A dress this feminine should be in a colour that’s pretty, not putty. Dip this in any tone of blush and we’re good to go.

Maleficent's Imelda Staunton and Dame Helen Mirren have some stuff in common: they’re both British actresses in the over-50 category, and they both wore green gowns this week. But that’s where the similarities end. While Helen Mirren was a vision in a modern-looking green lace number, Imelda appeared trapped in the '80s (and possibly at a prom) in this iridescent bunchy-style gown. Less is more, Imelda, less is more.

With a gown that boasted an unusual plunging neckline, ultra short mini skirt and sheer floor length overlay skirt with embellishment, European socialite and spokesmodel Hofit Golan has us seeing stars. Despite sticking to a black and gold palette this look has a long way to go before getting a classy stamp of approval. Less upper body flesh, more coverage on the bottom half and eliminating the cheesy star decals would be a start.

It takes some work to make olive green eveningwear alluring. This look starts off on the right track with touches of lace and a flowing skirt, but the fit needs a big helping hand. Adjusting proportions to shorten the lace on the top to above the hips would elongate the look of this gown, and a more flattering neckline wouldn’t hurt. Finally, black or gold accessories in place of the drab brown clutch and teal heels would have elevated this to leading lady status.

Already well known in Germany, starlet Ruby O. Fee has a ways to go before nailing a red carpet outing. This combination of very formal dress with a seriously structured hair ’do and heavy make up ages the star well beyond her 19 years. With a gown this dressy, we’d have taken a much lighter hand from the neck up. A simple pony, pale pinky lip colour and about half the contouring would have made for a fresh and age-appropriate approach.

In her sequin blazer and metallic pants, Polish director Malgorzata Szumowska is a woman after our own heart. But the resulting high gloss factor of these two pieces together is too overwhelming. Choosing to dial down the razzle-dazzle on one item, with either a satin blazer or lamé pants, would have been more spectacular and less of a spectacle.

Marie Josee Croze wore this to the premiere of Every Thing Will Be Fine but this dress is the opposite of that affirmation in every way. To get something this bohemian right, restraint must be used. A use of lesser fabrics in the patchwork design, with ruffles in specific a specific zone only, and a more distinct fit may have made turned this one around.

I’m mad at this dress because Alice Eve has a bangin’ body (as last seen in Star Trek Into Darkness) and I can’t appreciate any of it in this smock. The trick to maintaining a little sex appeal in a covered-up look is killer tailoring and with this moderate neckline, too long sleeves and full skirt, her curves are all but lost. Going with a higher neckline and a sleeker skirt with thigh-high slit intact or going the plunge neckline and no slit skirt route could have made this out of this world.
