Kindergarten isn’t just about sitting on the carpet for stories and learning how to read (though those things are important). It’s also about growing up and becoming an actual kid, and learning and experiencing things that you’ll take well into adulthood with you, like these Life Lessons you probably learned well before you turned six.
1 / 10
Friends are everything
What matters more in life than friends? When you’re four, not much. Nothing beats play dates and birthday parties and really, it should still be like that. Who else listens to you rant about your exes, is actually honest when you try on a dress and humours you by watching Dirty Dancing every Sunday? Have a friend you haven’t talked to in a while? Pick up the phone!

Take joy in the little things
Being designated Special Class Assistant (with a shiny badge!), drawings for your friends, a new book from the library, or a mug of warmed milk; these are the small things that matter when you’re a kid. And when you’re older, they matter even more so whether it’s taking 15 minutes to enjoy a cup of tea, or stopping to smell the roses, never give up on the small joys of life.

Good hygiene goes a long way
Sneezing into your sleeve and coughing into your elbow are the only ways to ensure people don’t cross the street to avoid you. And it all started in kindergarten where washing your hands was as important as eating.
4 / 10
Fashion rules are meant to be broken
Mismatched socks on purpose or superhero capes on a Tuesday rocked with pure confidence are the life lessons you learn that translate to wearing white after Labour Day and pairing pink with red (and fanny packs as purses).
5 / 10
Naps are the best
This one goes without saying because naps are literally the best. Make time for one; after all, all the kids do it.
6 / 10
Label everything
From lunch containers to scarves and every item of clothing in between, having them grab a Sharpie and write their names on everything (or order labels and have them stick them on everything) is just an early introduction to the beauty of grown-up monogramming.
7 / 10
Sharing is caring…
...(except when it comes to hats and brushes because lice) but the good kind of sharing like a book or favourite toy are the building blocks of a life--being kind to others and giving back to the community.
8 / 10
Never leave anyone behind
You’d never leave a friend behind at a bar, or let one go to the bathroom alone (the horror!) and this definitely must stem from kindergarten when you’re always, 100 per cent of the time, with a partner.
9 / 10
Confidence is key
Whether you’re asking for a raise or putting an end to friend-drama once and for all, sticking up for yourself is one of the most important parts of growing up. But really, this starts at age four or five with every “no butting in line!” and “Johnny hit me!” and “I’m going to tell my Mom on you!”
10 / 10
Never stop learning
There’s probably an art or cooking class you’d like to take but don’t because of time or money (or likely both) but just watch the joy a student has when they first learn to read, or draw the perfect heart and you’ll regret not continuing to enjoy learning like that, too.
