Isn't It Dee-Lightful: My New Year's Try
Many years ago I resolved never to bother with New Year's resolutions, and I've stuck with it ever since. - Dave Beard
I have a love-hate relationship with New Year's...as I do with most things.
I love the idea of a fresh start and 365 brand new days full of mystery and possibility.
I hate the pressure of having to make a resolution to better myself, help others and bring on world peace. I really don’t understand the concept of starting a brand new year off by setting yourself up for failure and disappointment. I could resolve to lose weight and blow some hard-earned cash on a gym membership that will sit idle in my wallet tucked snugly beside all my points cards. Or better yet I could resolve to quit drinking...but we all know that’s just crazy talk.
Why does it have to be a “resolution"? When I looked up "resolution" in the dictionary, this is what I found:
Resolution: The mental state or quality of being resolved or resolute; firmness of purpose.
As a mother of four I have been in varying mental states. As far as “firmness” goes, there really isn’t any of that left. So this year, I have decided not to make any New Year's resolutions, instead I am making New Year's “tries”...or “wishes”...or even a New Year's “I will give it a whirl.”
I do however love to make lists, so here is my New Year's List:
1) In 2013, I am going to try and have more patience for those who try my patience. If I fail, well then at least I tried. By the way, if you switch those letters up you get tired and if I fail, it's because I’m tired. Oh how I wish I could get more sleep. That’s it, my New Year's wish is to get more sleep. I think I will “give it a whirl."
There, resolutions done! I did not set myself up for any type of failure that can lead to self-loathing. The self-loathing that will ultimately lead to the emptying of an entire tub of Rocky Road ice cream. Oh my word, by NOT making a New Year's resolution, I have just saved myself five pounds! Another success. I am on a roll.
As far as I am concerned I did OK last year, why can’t I just celebrate that? I took care of my family, helped others, gave to charity, lived green, held the door for old ladies and hot men. What more can a girl do?
I try and have tried and I am tired. So I say to you, "Go forth this new year and just be FABULOUS in all you do."
Happy New Year!
