Eating on public transit, acceptable or disgusting?

Is eating on public transit acceptable? Are some foods okay to eat, like granola bars, and others not? Such as fast-food, hot food, takeout? What do you think?

Comments:

i totally agree!
Finally someone else is noticing something that's literally disgusted me for a while now..

The smell of salt and vinegar chips on the subway at 10 AM (or otherwise) is something I really don't need in my life - ewww - wait until you get home or carry some almonds in your purse/bag.

How about the germs these people are ingesting?? Touching the ttc railings and then licking your fingers should not be anyone's idea of a healthy snack!

i HATE when people eat smelly food on the train or bus. if it's something unsmelly, such as a banana or whatever, it's fine. but highly odorous food is for home, restaurants or at least outdoors. unless you're DYING of hunger, wait!!!

Some people might NEED to eat, I commute for 2 hours so need to eat on the train home. What is really gross is usually HOW people eat (ie, chewing with their mouths open) or if its something really stinky (like Indian food or tuna or this stuff my cubicle mate used to eat, vietnamese beef soup UGH smelled like socks that had been worn and not washed for a month)

It's disgusting to eat on public transit. You're in a small confined space with people breathing all over you.....among other things. Besides I've seen people pick their nose and wipe it on the poles or seats, I've seen people throw up, I've seen dirty drug addicts and homeless people sitting on the seats and leaning on the poles...oh I could write a book!! I don't even know how anyone COULD eat on public transit!!

This is so fascinating to me... i never see anything like this on transit and I ride it every day in downtown toronto... where does this stuff happen??

what transit are you riding on??

Well I agree that it is gross and most likely unhealthy to be eating non-snack foods on public transit. A sneaze will last in the air for 24 hours, and I know there is some sort of circulation but for the people who think they are safe from the sneazer because you are far apart, you are wrong! The nose "excreation"...will travel through the air and settle on you food, meaning you ate nose excreation. Snack foods that don't stink are usually in a bag and can be protect the short distance from your bag to you mouth. As gross as it is, and impolite to eat fast-foods on public transit I do have to give props to the people that I have seen eat on the bus, you made it look easy!

After recently spending time in Europe, I find myself wrinkling my nose up at a lot of things we North Americans do, wear and say. One of the worst offenders is eating...while walking, taking public transport, driving our cars. Not only does it look terrible, but are we really even paying attention to what we are eating. For the most part people are scarfing down junk: processed, preserved stuff that I am not even sure we can call food. Furthermore, with over 65% of North Americans being overweight, is it wise to eat pizza, burritos, potato chips and gigantic cups of soda pop while on the run. It would be so nice to adopt a more European attitude. When it is time to eat, sit for a few minutes and conciously enjoy what you are eating. It is so beneficial to eat this way, psychologicaly and physiologically. We can take a short moment to sit, relax and refuel and our bodies can do the job of beginning to digest calmly. Of course, we can't all take a moment everytime. Then why not toss an apple into your bag or another easily carried fruit. It's so much better for you, and I believe people won't wrinkle their noses up quite so much.

As long as it isn't smelly food or messy food, I have no problem with it. A quick granola bar or a bagel on the way to work or school is okay. I hate it when people litter though, so don't do it.

Wow if this has you so uptight I can only imagine what a REAL issue would do to you! People eat. They commute. Work, school. Not always time to run home or cook a meal. What about the loud music - or cell phone calls talking about 'last night'? Transit is public, and as such public are free to do as they wish (without breaking the laws). Loosen up or you'll die from a heart attack or high blood pressure.

Normally I don't care about people eating on the bus or metro, but when it's smelly or they're eating without manners, then it's annoying. I was sitting waiting for the metro to come one day after work and could not wait until I got home to eat so I started eating pieces of muffin, discreetly, politely. There were few people waiting, and then a woman came and sat on the bench sitting directly in front of me, waiting for the metro travelling in the opposite direction. She was STARING at me!! I was so annoyed I stopped eating, gave her a dirty look and got up and went and sat on the next bench. I think there's a bigger problem here, people STARE too much!!! I get self-conscious about something being on my face that shouldn't be there, or I sat on something dirty. Learn to look at inanimate objects instead of people for long periods of time. Very annoying.

A bit of candy or fruit is not bad, but a full lunch or slice of pizza not so much

I really don't mind if a person is eating in front of me in the subway, it does not bother me at all. I personally don't like to eat on the subway, for hygienic issues, but I really don't care if a person is chowing down in the subway...

well it all depends........ like if ur starving and u wanna eat fruit or a piece of candy EAT! i am so skinny and it isn't a good thing. if it is a sub or something try putting ur shoes in theirs. what if that person had a weird diet and needed something to eat or she will die of starvation. or maybe had a rough day at the office and needed some comfort food and don't ever ever think when ur really starving and wanna eat some of lunch and think that it might disturb someone. u are eating for the sake you won't faint! oh just don't eat peanut butter

As long as it has no smell, requires no fork, and no garbage is left behind, I'm okay with it. Personally- I would NEVER eat on the subway, no matter how hungry I was. It's so disgusting on those trains- I'd sooner eat in a public bathroom!;)
I don't go to the cinema because of all the smells and chewing noises, but taking public transport is the only option for some people. Therefore if you're gonna eat, be discreet, and remember not everyone loves the aroma of your favourite dish!

the worst is when people bring a big smelly bag of McDonalds onto the train. The whole train car literally smells bad. I still don't know why it is such a bad smell but smells like arm pits at the end of the day.

I think it's dependant as well. As long as you're not having a full course meal on the bus/train or having something that's bound to fall apart and make a mess then I see no problem with it. I mean, according to transit rules you're not supposed to but no one ever really seems to listen to that...I see people eating on the bus/train all the time, myself included. I usually eat things like an apple, granola bar, and as much as a small sandwich sometimes, I don't think it's gross, not chewing with my mouthfull or anything ; )

Of course it ok if people eat something like granola bars, but, a greasy smelly burger is the one thing that is showing no- i said NO respect for others around and its unbelievble to think that some people really thing its ok to do such thing! If they had a brain the'd realise that, that is the one way to loose friends and annoy people!

If your fat save it because you will probably turn every other persons appetite down. If you are eating in a sensible manner, please go ahead. Do I dislike fat people? You bet. As much as I dislike palin. Its a mutual agreement.

We should not allow food on transport period. It creates so many issues from litter to nausea to disturbingly dangerous conditions for slipping and falling. We are a culture of overweight people who eat badly. This is an invitation for people to eat better, sit down and not eat on the run, and if you have to, do it above ground where you can take a moment to eat and put your rubbish away.
