Weekend Warriors

Canadian rockers Loverboy gleefully sang that everybody’s working for the weekend. Who knew Mike Reno and gang could be so right?! When the work week is monotonous, bills are screaming to be paid, and you have no time to yourself, just think ahead to the weekend where all delights await!

Friday I’m in Love – The Cure
Wishing weekdays away? Join the club! All the best adventures are on tap over the weekend. Use Friday to jump-start two days of indulgence.

Best lyric: Monday you can fall apart. Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart. Thursday doesn't even start. It's Friday I'm in love.

Friday Night – Lily Allen
Post-work drinks after a dreadful week and cheeky Lily is suited and booted, ready to take on all comers. If you want your night to be uneventful, stay away from swaggering girls like Lil!

Best lyric:: Don't try and test me ‘cos you'll get reaction, another drink and I'm ready for action. I don't know who you think you are, but making people scared won’t get you very far.

Saturday – Saint Etienne
Ah, Saturday mornings! No alarm clock to obey. No morning commute. A hangover? No problem! Take a few hours to recover and then start all over again as the evening descends.

Best lyric: Sunshine coming in through my window, painting patterns upon the pillow. Draw the blind, just in time. Trying to wake up but minds still foggy, someone pour me another coffee, strong and black, half a sack. Hey! Every Saturday. Get up late but it's okay.

Saturday Night – Bay City Rollers
All praise the crown jewel of the weekend, Saturday night. Nobody does an ode to Saturday like the Rollers. Tartan-trimmed trews, completely optional.

Best lyric: At the good ole rock and roll road show, I gotta go.Saturday Night, Saturday Night. Gonna rock it up, roll it up, do it all, have a ball. Saturday Night, Saturday Night. It's just a Saturday Night. It's just a Saturday Night. It's just a Saturday Night. S-A-T-U-R-D-A-Y night!

Saturday Night’s Alright for a Fight – Elton John
The idea of Elton throwing punches is a bit off but whatevs. See, isn’t this song a prime example of what weekends were made for? Reinvent yourself! When Monday morning slinks back around, be crowned Ms. Popular around the water cooler with your gossip-worthy misadventures.

Best lyric: Don't give us none of your aggravation. We had it with your discipline. Saturday night's alright for fighting, get a little action in. Get about as oiled as a diesel train. Gonna set this dance alight ‘cause Saturday night's the night I like. Saturday night's alright alright alright.

Saturday Night – Suede
We all need the opportunity to unwind from career stresses and demands and who better to help but our friends? A night out with the gang will make all worries distant and will help boost your spirits for the new week ahead.

Best lyric: Today she's been sat there, sat there in a black chair, office furniture, but it'll be alright. ‘Cos tonight we'll go drinking we'll do silly things, and never let the winter in. And it'll be okay like everyone says, it'll be alright and ever so nice.

Sunday Morning – k-os
If you’re in demand as much as dear k-os with a whirlwind lifestyle of 24/7 excitement, you would wish for Sunday morning. Peaceful, calm hours blanketed by a comfy, warm duvet. Can you blame him?

Best lyric: Everyday is Saturday night, but I can't wait for Sunday morning, Sunday morning.

Pleasant Valley Sunday – The Monkees
Backyards and barbecues were born with lazy suburban Sundays in mind. Stuck in the city? Enjoy a picnic in an urban park. With your friends in tow, the party is halfway there.

Best lyric: Another Pleasant Valley Sunday. Charcoal burning everywhere. Rows of houses that are all the same and no one seems to care.

Sunday Sunday – Blur
Ah, weekend traditions. Big meals, mindless entertainment, some habits are tough to break but it’s the weekend so indulge. To-do lists and rushing about are best left for the working week.

Best lyric: Sunday, Sunday here again in tidy attire. You read the colour supplement, the TV guide. You dream of protein on a plate, regret you left it quite so late. You gather the family around the table to eat enough to sleep. And Mother's Pride is your epithet. That extra slice you'll soon regret so going out is your best bet, then bingo yourself to sleep. Oh that Sunday sleep....

Every Day Is Like Sunday – Morrissey
Dreading a return to the daily grind tomorrow? Join Mr. Mope for a dose of melancholy that will have you crying into your pillow and cursing 9-5.

Best lyric: Everyday is like Sunday; Everyday is silent and grey.

Comments:

Love the inclusion of the Bay City Rollers in the list!! Many people's secret (or not-so-secret) guilty pleasure. Is it sad that I only know the older songs and none of the new ones, yet I'm in my mid-twenties?! I'll have to check some of these new ones out! Thanks for the tips.
