Get Mad!
Here’s your excuse to mosh
Why are boys so good at aggression? I think it might have something to do with society forcing them to suppress all those tears. Think about it: how angry would you be if you hadn’t been allowed to cry after that awful haircut? Or after Daniel Lewis didn’t ask you to dance in seventh grade (hold on, I’m verklempt, okay)? Pret-ty peeved. But girls can get angry, too. One of my favourite things to do when I’m angry is rock it up with these (mostly) testosterone-charged songs. So turn up the stereo and scrreeaaam.
My Own Summer (Shove It) – Deftones
This song is the epitome of late 90s rock. It starts off all dark and quiet and then, of course, in the middle, they just start yelling. It’s also really eerie and by the time you get to the middle of the song, you’re seriously screaming and headbanging.
Best lyric: SHOVE IT!
Break Stuff – Limp Bizkit
This is definitely my standby song for a bad day. I can thrash about and rarrrr and flail around my living room (or, let’s be honest, my office rolley chair) and just let loose. Wanting to break stuff is definitely a raw emotion and singing about it is definitely better than actually doing it.
Best lyric: Your best bet is stay away motherf***r / it’s just one of those days
Caught out There – Kelis
Kelis is like “I break, so this is how it goes” and then “I HATE YOU! SO MUCH! RIGHT NOW! AHHH.” And you’re like, I feel your pain Kelis. I hate that person too!
Best lyric: [See above]
One Step Closer – Linkin Park
Ahh, a good yell fest. This old tune is more effective for getting anger out than their latest hit, Bleed it Out (which is catchy nonetheless). Put this on and thrust your head about. You’ll feel better, I promise.
Best lyrics: SHUT UP WHEN I’M TALKING TO YOU!
I Hate Everything About You – Three Days Grace
I guess this is the 21st-century version of that Ugly Kid Joe song. Remember when your hormones took over your whole body and you hated the way your mom chewed her steak? I’m so disappointed in you, Dad!
Best lyrics: I hate everything about you / Why do I love you?
Ring the Alarm – Beyonce
Aside from being a good song to listen to when you’re angry, this is an excellent song for the gym. I can do three full minutes of abs to this song purely based on my anger towards various people. What a practical way to express your ill will.
Best lyrics: People told me 'bout the flames / I couldn't see through the smoke / When I need answers, accusations
Try Honesty – Billy Talent
Oh gosh! Here’s another song about being angry at mom and dad. I love those! Sometimes you just have to relive those awful teenage years.
Best lyrics: Forgive me father, why should you bother? TRY HONESTY!
The One – Foo Fighters
This difficult-to-find Foos tune is one of my favourites from that band. And, by hard to find, I mean that it wasn’t in the iTunes store. It took me a long time to locate this song, which is on the Orange County soundtrack. It’s good for when you’re mad at your boyfriend even though you know you’ll never marry him anyway. I’m not going to lie. It’s kinda like their latest song, The Pretender. But better.
Best lyrics: You’re not the one, but you’re the only one that can make me feel like sh*t
