The Truth About Men... And Their Moms

There’s something we don’t know about men. And it probably has a lot to do with their mothers. Ever wonder why dudes are so attached to mommy? Well, reading Whatever Makes You Happy by William Sutcliffe is definitely a step in the right direction if you’re trying to decipher the *cough* unfair sex.
Lots of women try to understand why some guys just won’t grow up – take it from Sutcliffe – there’s a lot going on under the surface to give us clues. Whatever Makes You Happy focuses on three 34-year-old men and their distinct relationships with their mothers. It’s understandable that Sutcliffe can write so well about thirtysomething men – he happens to be one – but the insight that he bestows on his middle-aged female characters is definitely something to behold. The story, about three mothers who decide to ambush their respective sons into spending a week together and getting their lives in order, is honest, touching and always hilarious. If you like Nick Hornby, this is a great summer read to devour in one sunny weekend (which is exactly what I did).
Though I’m no closer to understanding how lots of dudes can stand to stay overwrought with extended adolescence, I’m definitely a little more light-hearted about the whole thing. Check out the book out and order it from amazon.ca - and here's an interview with the man himself.
