Playlist: Getting Dressed on Date Night

You’ve got yourself a date, and he’s cute and funny. That’s pretty awesome already. Here’s a list of high-energy songs to get you psyched for the big night out―and help remember that you’ve got plenty to offer yourself.

The Party Mama Playlist

This party mama playlist will get the party started!

Inspired by the Real Housewives: A Double Shot of New Jersey and Atlanta

What a wonderful time to be a Slice girl! With not one but two new Real Housewives series to keep us company into the chilly autumn nights, it’s time to grab the champagne and some tunes to toast the arrival of our new besties from New Jersey and Atlanta. Thought the gals from the Big Apple and the O.C. were a handful? You’ve seen nothing yet!

Most Influential British Bands of All Time

Charged with the feat of selecting songs from the best British bands of all time, I was faced with several conundrums: first and foremost, do I choose the best-known British acts or do I choose the ones I think are the best? Even though I consider myself to have, well, the best taste in the world, I decided that instead of inflicting my choices onto the lovely (and good-looking) readers of slice.ca, I would choose the bands that have made the biggest impact on the world of music in the last 50 years.

Weekend Warriors

Canadian rockers Loverboy gleefully sang that everybody’s working for the weekend. Who knew Mike Reno and gang could be so right?! When the work week is monotonous, bills are screaming to be paid, and you have no time to yourself, just think ahead to the weekend where all delights await!

Best Songs from the 80s

I entered high school in 1981 so I know whereof I speak when it comes to the top anthems of the ‘80s. This is the definitive list of what made the dance floors bounce or what we were watching on MuchMusic.

Spoiled Rotten

There are some stars out there who like to pretend they’re still all down with the streets. Take J-Lo for instance and her insistence that she’s “real” even though we know she’s just an eccentric crazy lady with twins and a butterface husband who never goes into the sun.

The Fame Game

Turn on your television and be bombarded by talent contests, reality, and primetime game shows—dancing, singing, being a nuisance—the goal is to be famous! Have no talent? Nowadays, it doesn’t matter.

You need it, you love it

Feeling sleep deprived? The skill of catching 40 winks—or more—is a dying art in our high-tech, tapped-in society. The pursuit of a peaceful, uninterrupted sleep is the new status symbol. Close the curtains, pull down the shades, it’s time to relax and give in to somnolence-spiked songs.

Virgin Festival 08 Playlist

I ask you, dear readers, where can you see Noel Gallagher get beat up by a random man, stand shoulder-to-shoulder with pop DJ Moby, and rock out to some of the best British bands of our time? The answer, of course, is the Virgin Festival, now in its third year in Canada.

Beautiful

Every once in a while, hot pop stars start to really examine deep issues, like body issues. That’s when they’re inspired to remember the days before they had a makeup artist, stylist and personal trainer and an eating disorder.

Cash Rules Everything Around Me

Cool cash…everybody wants it. How much is enough? Money doesn’t make the world go round, but it does help the rotation spin more smoothly. Invest in this cache of tunes dedicated to filthy lucre.

Musician Edition: Estelle

Sassy British import Estelle gives us the goods about the music that inspires her and the song that changed her life.

The End of a Friend

Friendship can be so cruel. One day you’re best friends with Michelle Smith and the next, she’s moved her desk over to the yellow group and you have to sit next to Nelson Jones, who totally hasn’t started wearing deodorant yet. The worst part is that you thought you were going to be best friends for life.

Gossip

Quite often talk is cheap and it’s never as thrifty as when it involves gossip. Many people show a public distain for the sport of mud-slinging, but privately, it’s a whole different ballgame. Smear campaigns and scandal sharing are the glue that bonds today’s tribes.

Long Distance Relationships

In today’s hectic world, finding your significant other isn’t as easy as hooking up at the local club. Many of us are meeting our soul mates via the internet, on vacation or through far-away friends. Welcome to the pain and pleasure of the long distance relationship.

Songs to Facebook to

Something to listen to while you stalk people from high school.

Spring In The Air

Tired of snow, ice and that bulky parka? You are not alone! We’re all fed up with snowstorms and chilly vibes. Even the calendar is beckoning us to pack up our winter woollies. After a depressing deep freeze, spring ushers in a welcome change and some appropriate sunny tunes.

Sex

Sex doesn’t always equate to love. That’s why we’ve chronicled the lustiest ditties this side of Closer. Check out our picks for sexiest songs – or songs that talk the most about sex, at least.

Dismissed

The working world is not what it used to be. A job for life? Sorry, but such security went out of fashion with mood rings and pet rocks. Layoffs, attrition, downsizing—whatever the PC label, it’s still the axe.

Funeral Songs for Hipsters

A survey released a few years ago revealed Europeans’ unsurprisingly maudlin song choices for their funerals. On the list was Robbie Williams (Angels), Bette Midler (Wind Beneath My Wings) (ugh), and Elton John (Candle in the Wind). Gross! I want my funeral to be fresh.

Drive, She Said

Driving just isn’t the same without music. Whether you go old school with the radio or are riding the technology wave with an iPod, a driving soundtrack is as essential as a trusty set of brakes.

Get Mad!

Why are boys so good at aggression? I think it might have something to do with society forcing them to suppress all those tears. Think about it: how angry would you be if you hadn’t been allowed to cry after that awful haircut?

Modelling Playlist

Throw on some heels and walk around your basement like you mean it!

Fefe Dobson’s Picks

Hard rockin’ hottie Fefe Dobson is hard at work on her next album. After parting ways with her last label, she’s working independently for now, so hit up her MySpace page for the latest in all things Fefe.

Ben Folds’ Picks

Piano impresario Ben Folds sat down with us and schooled us on what he’s listening to these days. “I don’t stay current for the sake of staying current,” he says, “the best songs, old and new, develop. They take a motif and make it soar.”

A Playlist to Indulge By

Chocolate, salty snacks, ice cream…life would be so boringly healthy without them. Where would we turn in times of crisis without the big three? Here’s a buffet of songs to tempt your taste buds and keep you coming back for second helpings!

60s Lounge

We make fun of his awful teeth and cheesy catch phrases, but Austin Powers is a cool cat where his musical tastes were concerned. 1960s lounge lizard tunes are timeless, the perfect party pleasers.

Name Game

Name the fastest method to climb into the charts? Invest in the proven brand of an already famous celebrity! If they’re dead—even better!

Virgin Festival 2007 Playlist

The Virgin Fest, a two-day musical extravaganza that hit the Toronto Island in September of this year, was the bomb diggity. With power pop and rock bands you’ve loved for years,

Shop Till You Drop

Shopping is a sport in itself, and just like the upcoming volleyball tournament or marathon, inspiring tunes are required for your training to achieve the utmost results! Invest in these songs for optimum purchasing power! Go forth and spend!

Friend or Foe?

A life without friendship is like a day without chocolate—boring and tasteless. Friendships give us support, plenty of drama, and the feeling of belonging.

Your Metamorphosis

One of the most important things to consider during your quest to find the meaning of life, aside from what Nietzsche had to say, is the type of music that you're going to listen to.

Musical Cheese

Before settling on the main musical course, sometimes it’s ideal to clean the palate with some musical cheese. This batch of songs is chock full of fromage – caution advised for lactose intolerant listeners.

Crushed By Love

Sure, love can be grand, but many a time it kicks the living daylights out of you. Here’s a batch of musical band aids that will make you feel not so alone.

It’s Sweet Revenge!

Let’s face it. Females aren’t all sweetness and light. Sometimes, we like to show our darker, more menacing side. Step into the spotlight, revenge. What raises this underrated trait more often than any other cause? Easy…men. Keep this playlist handy when you need to fight back.

Musician Edition - Aqualung

If you’ve never listened to the musical stylings of Aqualung, now is a good time to start. The down-tempo laid back music is reminiscent of Coldplay, but it definitely takes cues from Radiohead circa 1999.

Musician Edition - Suzie McNeil

Canada’s own Suzie McNeil is finally home; after spending a year in LA after her break out on 2005’s RockStar: INXS, she’s appearing in the Toronto stage production of “We Will Rock You”.
