Episode 11 - L’Oréal Fashion Week

The energy at L’Oréal Fashion Week for the Project Runway Canada shows is seriously mind-boggling. On top of it being opening night of the Spring 2008 Collections, L’Oréal Fashion Week has a new home this season, with massive tents housing the event at Nathan Phillips Square – a la Bryant Park in New York (albeit on a smaller scale). On top of all this, Project Runway Canada, which, to say the least, has grabbed the attention of the fashion community, is showcasing the work of its three finalists … and Iman is in the house. Otherwise graceful and polite people are clamoring to get into the show, and we literally have to be dragged through the crowds to get to our seats.

Just as we are seated, Iman emerges from backstage onto the Runway, turning jaded fashionistas into giddy little schoolgirls. Let’s start the show.

In short, all three shows are absolutely amazing, and the designers should be very proud of themselves – the judges are certainly extraordinarily proud.

This is, of course, the toughest decision we have had to make, and the designers don’t make it any easier; they present three outstanding, but very different collections, and they are three outstanding, but very different individuals – all of whom will succeed, win or lose.

MG’s ‘architectural’ collection is gorgeous - very intricate techniques with great fits, great silhouettes, great fabrics and great palate. There’s not much wrong with this collection. Our only concern is that we know (and MG acknowledges) that this a departure from her general design aesthetic, and we wonder if she can deliver a consistent aesthetic going forward.

Lucian’s collection is jaw-dropping. The crowd loves it and so do the judges. Gorgeous fabrics, perfect construction, incredible workmanship. Full stop.

Biddell is last, and from the opening look, every person in the room is on the edge of their seat. There is a certain energy to Biddell’s clothes that the models obviously feel when they wear them, and this energy pervades the room. I feel a bit like I’m at a Dsquared2 show – not knowing what to expect next, but just knowing it will be slammin’.

During deliberations, Rita makes her position clear, and it’s certainly a defensible one – she’s all about Lucian ... to the point where she cries about his collection. He cries too. Iman makes the point that Lucian’s collection reminded her A LOT of Galliano, and expresses concern about this. While I don’t really see this as a concern (and what young designer doesn’t want to be compared to Galliano?), Biddell’s collection reminds me of no other designer. It reminds me of Biddell. It’s ingenious, it’s unexpected, and it’s fresh. Iman agrees, and after a very lengthy discussion, and we have our winner.

Don’t hate. Congratulate. Biddell is immensely talented, and perhaps more importantly, extremely innovative. We feel he has what it takes to succeed in this business, and we know we will see great things from him.

Couture Critic:

I couldn't disagree with you more.

Shawn clearly has strong analytical skills, and the analysis of MG is accurate. If she acknowledges herself that the collection she showed is out of character for her, then the judges should be concerned about her ability to or liklihood of maintaining a somewhat consistent design aesthetic (as both Biddell and Lucain clearly always do, and did in their finale presentations).

Retailers and customers expect designers to develop, but not to make hard left and right turns every season. They expect consistency in regards to overall aesthetic. MG has proven (e.g. her opera gown fiasco) and said herself that she doesn't care what people expect. That is fine, but it cost her the prize.

I think Shawn's presence on the panel added a lot. He may be flashy, but he's also clearly quite intelligent, and he knows the business fashion.

I'm addicted to Biddell to. Can't wait to see more from him . GOOD CALL!

Thank you for pushing Iman in the right direction.

Couture Critic is amazingly inept. You have nailed these final three perfectly. The only problem is that someone as design sloppy and self centered as MG was in the final at all! She was so clearly in way over her head or way in her own head as usual.

Thanks Shawn for a great year - I hope to see you again next season. Your comments were insightful...you were by far the strongest judge....or at least I got your viewpoint.

Good choice with Biddell (thank you!!!!!!)

Good job Shawn! You were direct and accurate in your assessments and we often found ourselves nodding at the TV when you spoke. This show was well done and so entertaining.....we want more!

Who is this guy? Never heard of him before this show. Couldn't they get a judge with more credibility? Like Tu Ly or Joeffer Caoc or Brian Bailey? Or some other Canadian designer that we've actually heard of? Everybody knows Pink Tartan - who has ever heard of Bustle Clothing? Oh well, he tried.

Shawn,

I can't help but laugh at "Coutute Critic" for blowing her own cover, and bringing her own jealousy to forefront. She writes:

"As for my credentials, I can assure you honey that they are rock solid . Did you ever equate the fact that rock solid designers take exception to "pretenders"...".

Nice one couture critic - so you are or were a designer. BFD. Shawn has been able to learn and achieve more than you have in the 6 years he's been in the industry, and has been appointed as a judge on the show you watch every week. It's undersatndable that this makes you burn with jealousy.

Truth is, you can complain about his credentials all you want, he still did a great job and Slice is not going to hire you.

Jia,

Most of us were at the Bustle show - everyone in attendance loved it, there was a huge buzz throughout fashion week about it, and it received loads of coverage and great praise.

Were you at the Bustle show?

Well Shawn you had a great tennis game but in your baggy outfits (when they were not yet fashionable)I did not expect your rise to fashion prominence. Lawyer? yes, fashionisto? Hmm ... Ahead of your time I guess. The show was great. Most of the designers are so hardworking, spirited and gifted.I'd like to see collections from most of them.I really liked Lucian's and MG's but to my complete surprise I found myself choosing Biddell's. I hope he uses his gifts, talent and winnings wisely. I think he will. Insecurity tends to masquerade as jerkish/C***y behaviour sometimes.

Someone who knew you when
Tuesday, 18 December 2007 21:35 PM EST
Well I already dissed your own bland "preppy chic on acid" collections in an earlier blog, so it's only fair to lay down some respect where it's due too...

Good call on this one, throwing dresses with hoods at Fashion Week was a ballsy move by Biddell and it payed off in spades.

He does seem able to fly by the seat of his pants at the last minute and pull it off consistently.

He's also got the "edge" that Canada needs to break out of always being the bridesmaid and never the bride in fashion, maybe he can teach you a thing or two?

Lucien is gonna fly anyway without the prize, but Bidell wouldn't have, if he uses this gift wisely without squandering it and acting like a big kid, he has what it takes to put Canuck Fashion on the map.

I respect that you took a stance and backed that and I respect Iman for taking a risk on an untamed but unique talent too. Lucien would have been your "safe bet" in this situation we already know he'll do fine, I'm now excited to see what, if anything happens with Biddell.

Great job Shawn - you were right on with your assessment of all designers ... and Biddell is the the one.

It's Biddell bitch!

We had regular Monday night PRC get togethers. We'll miss them and you!

people! all this hating has GOT to stop!

PRC was a-may-zing. compelling, entertaining, exciting, mildly addictive...all this nit-picking and negativity is completely off-focus. obviously, we all loved the show, or it wouldn't evoke such reactions. but picking on people (especially at this point, when the show is wrapped...) is such a waste of time!

shawn was great. he is a talented, charismatic, young designer. emphasis on young. his lack of experience, in terms of being compared to his american counter-part, michael kors, is notable, but that doesn't take away from his talent, and the fact that he IS a designer from canada. (where the pool to draw from is, unfortunately, shallow).

plus, shawn is so so good on camera. he's always willing to go toe-to-toe with iman, (not an easy task, when, i think, she might be a totally intimidating individual in person), he makes valid points about each designer, he is fair, and objective, and hilarious on camera, with personality for miles. who cares that he's only been in the game for under a decade, when he's so fun to watch on tv?

i didn't always agree with him and his points, (or the other judges, or who got sent home when, etc...)but that's why he wasn't the only judge on the show, right?

i'm really looking forward to season 2, and to seeing shawn on the panel of judges. PRC was a a huge success, and my only complaint over-all is that there isn't more of it to watch now.

not a shawn hater, but a PRC luv-ah!

Shawn,

You did a great job in a difficult stuation. I enjoyed the finale very much and will watch it again on Saturday. Now that I know the outcome I can concentrate on looking more closely at the creations.

It must be very different for you and the other judges to see these outfits close-up. TV only gives us an impression of the actual clothes.

No-one as yet has mentioned that fact in this blog. The judges are privy to much more in terms of detail etc. than we are as mere viewers.

Looking forward to your return in season II.

ote for season II...does the final runway show have to be so fast? It was hard sometimes to form an impression. Everything became a blur.

See you at Starbucks!

Happy Holidays!

Don't try to be cute unless you really know what you're talking about.

Biddell is unquestionably more innovative and probably more talented than any of the other designers on Project Runway Canada.

Fashion can not be re-invented anymore than the wheel can ... let's face it: on some level it's all been done before. BUT, he is one of the most innovative I have seen in a long long time.

Kudos to the judges for recognizing that (particularly Shawn for pushing that issue with the almighty Iman). She doesn't strike me as the easily swayed type, and she was hanging in Lucian's corner for the last few episodes.

All three collections were great, but Biddell was the right choice.

Great finale!

BATES....look at what you quoted and how you replied.

"As for my credentials, I can assure you honey that they are rock solid . Did you ever equate the fact that rock solid designers take exception to "pretenders"...".

"Nice one couture critic - so you are or were a designer. BFD."

Now, come on. Do you think that the contestants really read these things?

You better go look under your bed! Megan might be lurking under there, just waiting to jump out and scare you with bad sewing!

Hey Master,

I think you're missing the point. Couture critic (like a handful of others) is coming for Shawn because she is a disgruntled designer who can't accept that Shawn is a judge on this show and she is not.

Hers jealousy and the jealousy of the other haters is just funny.

I just don't understand why some people are still questioning the credentials of someone who proved themselves by doing a solid job. The season's over, and Shawn proved he was right for the job - he handled Iman. The panel was perfectly balanced in my opinion (though Rita could have had a bit more conviction to her opinions).

I loved the show.

Bates

Actually Iman said Lucian's collection reminded her of DIOR not Galliano. I believe Lucian should have won, Biddell does not have the discipline to wisely use the prize money or the internship. He's TOO immature and disrespectful.

DIOR=BORE

Shawn was amazing....to the point and tuned in to what alot of people want to see in design....especially us "laypersons"....loved the show, good job!!

luvin it
Sunday, 23 December 2007 01:46 AM EST

I just have to add, that i found it quiet interesting that Lucian was accused of copying Dior, while none of the judges said anything about Biddel copying his previous designs. His black dress, had a VERY similar design to the one he did for Keep a Child Alive, and that wasn't his only design that he had copied. There was one particular design that he created for himself in one of the Episodes, and he used that same idea for 2 of the garments that he created in the last episode. Now why is it that you Shawn, who accused Lucian of copying his own designs throughout the show said nothing about Biddel copying his previous designs?

..interesting...
Sunday, 23 December 2007 10:15 AM EST
You were the only honest judge on the show. How could anyone else but Biddell win. I'm no fashionista and neither is my husband. We are both in our 50s. My neighbour also in her 50s watched the show with us. We all picked Biddell to win. It was a no-brainer - he was different - can sew like crazy. Couldn't figure Rita out -- who wants a dress with crocheted dollies on it. If I was still 20, I would wear Biddell's stuff. Don't underestimate grey power....

Nyree
Sunday, 30 December 2007 16:41 PM EST
Yes - I agree with Nyree - Biddell, as you said, is a true innovator who presented the most ingenius collection. He may have been rude, but he is a great designer and was great to watch on the show. So were you - loved your comments and your outfits. You're a 'sharpie' in more ways than one!

See you on Season 2!!
Thursday, 03 January 2008 17:36 PM EST
Biddell's designs look like they come directly from the latest at Nygard. In fact, if you look at the nygard website, the similarities are freaky. Biddell may look a little like a young Alexander McQueen - and he may have some of his tailoring skill - but he is no Alexander McQueen and never will be. You were won over by the posturing. tsk tsk.

Hey Shawn,

I watched a great Bustle segment on Fashion File over the weekend. Your stuff is really great. Now I see even more why you like Biddell (I like him too): both you and Bidell really aren't afraid to do something different. But still gorgeous. Congrats. Your work is amazing, and you deserve all you have achieved.

See you next season!

I doubt you'll ever read this, but In case you do read here, I want to say that I saw your picture and read your interview in the Star on Thursday, and I was really impressed with what you said.

I think its' great that you get involved with charities, and you're absolutely right about members of the fashion community stepping back and remembering that for some people clothing (not fashion) is a basic need.

Good for you for setting a good example and being a spokesperson for the fashion biz in Canada!

I Love you on the show, and can't wait for next year. For now, my roomates and I are settling for re-runs and for Project Runway US - which is not nearly as good as our version here in Canada!

I dont know why I didn't tell you this when I saw you in the Antique market yesterday (you looked super-cool by the way). But I think you are great on the show - and so does the lady I was buying gloves from when we spotted you.

I wanted to stop you to tell you this, but then you ran into people you know and I chickened out. Anyway, my friends and I watching the series again, and we love you, and I agree with (most of) your comments!

if Canada hopes to become more credible and really begin to make waves in the international fashion scene, then stop putting people like Shawn in the spot light and calling them designers. He is not a designer, he is a buisness man who is aiming to run a label with someone elses money. There is nothing wrong with this, but lets start giving attention to Canadians who are truly talented, Evan Biddelle, though sometimes arrogant, is one of these talents. I hope that PRC moves forward with judges who are actually qualified to juge fashion and not put people like Shawn on the show simply because they think he is flashy and a personality. Maybe Evan could come back to judge? How about independant designers who actually can draft a pattern and sew a garment?

just a lil fashion girl
Thursday, 28 February 2008 22:34 PM EST
Boy, you are 'just a lil fashion girl', because your comments make no sense at all. In one breath you're saying Shawn isn't qualified to judge fashion, and in the next saying Evan Biddell (the designer Shawn fought for against the other judges) is is a truly talented designer.

Would't that make Shawn a pretty good judge of talent, according to your own assessment of what constitutes a good designer?

Did you even watch Project Runway Canada?

Can you even comprehend the flaws in your logic?

... stick to being a 'lil fashion girl', and leave the judging to the smart people.

Shawn is finger licking good as a judge. I can't wait to see more of his saucy goodness on the new season. Hope he doesn't chicken out. And speaking of chicken, when will they let you know the truth about his love of the greasy bird? The man is a revnous chicken-hawk for the Colonel's 11 herbs and S***es.
