At The End Of My Leash

Brad's Blog - Episode 4049: Canine killers?

Meeting Jess and Lucas was emotional because their story is one that I don’t particularly look forward to but, at the same time, look forward to. It’s almost a love-hate relationship. I had ample time to play over in my head why I am being called in to help. Over and over and over in my head, the landscape of the countryside was calming but not calming enough to remove the urgency of this matter.

Upon arrival, I met Lucas and Jess and the three dogs, who are filled with energy and happiness. I saw the dogs in the window, so I immediately saw some errors. Rules need to be put in place NOW, not later. Fixing the abundance of talking from Lucas will be crucial and building up Jess’s confidence is important as well.

Bringing in a group of dogs was fun because both Lucas and Jess had eyes the size of a full moon. There was so much worry and concern, I was laughing in my head because Lucas got to see his dogs being dogs and at the same time Lucas got a workout.

Everything fell apart in the city when we met at a dog park. My worry and concerns came to life when I watched the dogs blow off Lucas and Jess. The clock was ticking and I was not impressed. They need a miracle for these dogs or they are dead!

Jess and Lucas are sinking everything into this but I want more. I want them to give absolutely everything they have and I want these dogs to live. The jury has the final word and I want Jess and Lucas to prove they can do it.

Everyone is tense and the fake laughter is hiding real emotions. Knowing that the dogs need to prove they’ve been educated and changed comes down to one divine moment. The jury is waiting and it’s “go” time.

If you haven’t watched the episode, watch to see what happens.

Brad

Well, this episode was quite the hot topic. In an awful situation, where the emotions are running high, hard decisions have to be made, and it's hard to know what the right decision is. I applaud Jess and Lucas, along with their family and neighbors, for giving their dogs a chance and keeping an open mind. I wish you, and your family the best, and I hope the dogs are still doing really well!

I must agree with you Lyne , very hot topic. Since I got yet another pet dumped on me from my son, our newest addition is 8 yrs old female cat Peanut. It's been very intriging trying to figure out how the dogs see the cat and vise versa.I'm also impressed that Jess and Lucas did not dismiss their tragedy and asked for help even though the country side provides for more freedom for animals but not necessary structure. I also admire their neighbour for giving them support with thier small child. I'm not so sure if city people are so understanding. My real question in all of this is, if the dogs had not reformed, would Brad have suggested to put the dogs down? What are the signs to look for?

Yeah I was also wondering if Brad would actually suggest putting them down.

BTW is it wrong for a guy to love Brad, his show and his training techniques? I mean why is this site so pink? I think they are trying to fend off men.

Anyway, can't wait till the next episode, this one was quite emotional, I hope the next one is lighter. I really want Brad to train one of those idiot dog owners that let their dogs sit on their laps while they drive.

Haha...that made me laugh, L Robert L!

That's one of my pet peeves as well.

(...and no, it's not wrong to love Brad if you're a guy)

haha oh. oky.

Yeah I love Brad, I bought his book and the past 4 days have been using his techniques.. its so awesome! My dogs are already showing a lot of progress, its really amazing.

Although I find that I am going through the same thing Brad goes through on the show. I am living with my parents and I have to teach them to use Brads rules. I told them 'no cookies ever' and guess what my dad does. COOKIES GALORE! (I had to hide the cookies on him).

It's really quite sad how people want their pets trained and to behave, yet they are not willing to put in any effort.

Hi everyone...I just want to pick up on L Robert L's comment about dogs in cars.

I post this for your consideration.

When traveling with your dog - think about how you would restrain a child.

Children should not be in the front seat if the airbag is activated. The airbag can cause serious harm or death for a small child. And a dog.

You don't leave children unrestrained in the backseat - because in a collision, they can fly into the back of you or through the windshield. So can a dog.

Please think about using a specially designed dog seatbelt and buckle up for safety - in the back seat. There are other choices, too. A kennel or if you have a van, SUV or wagon - you can also get dividers.

A dog, loose in the car, distracts you from driving, can be crushed between driver and steering wheel, can fly through the windshield, into the back of your head, slam to the floor, etc., etc., etc. NONE of which is good for you or your dog.

Please think about it. Many of us don't.

NEED HELP!

Hey again, I bought Brads book and started using his techniques 5 days ago. I have so many questions I really don't know where to begin.

I have 2 small dogs, 1 dog named Barely is always barking. Our other dog is Harley, he is very scared and very timid. Both are un-socialized and untrained.

When I take them to the dog park, both dogs bark and snap at other dogs (They dont seem to have the desire to actually fight or bite another animal/human). Walking down the path they will see another dog and run toward it and start barking and snapping at it. Also both will run from other dogs if the other dogs try to sniff them or play with them.

Barely barks more and Harley runs away more. When Barley barks I correct her under the jaw and say 'no bark'. Another thing I tried was put her in time out, but the reason she barks is because she isn't socialized, so how would un-socializing her by tying her up help? It just makes her more anxious and yappy (I did put her in time out with Harley once). I can understand putting a dog in time out that has already been socialized and knows the right way to behave.

I just feel so overwhelmed with questions I want to ask Brad, I just don't know when or if he'd even respond if I sent him an email.

So hopefully someone here can answer my questions.

PS: The dogs HAVE shown progress. Harley has played with some smaller dogs. Ugh. I don't think I can even get a proper answer without explaining everything about my dogs behaviors etc. If someone here uses Brads techniques and can help me, could you please send me an email green_cola@hotmail.com (or we can chat through this blog), I have lots of questions and I am very committed to training these dogs.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies.

I live in Canada BC. Also I recently discovered some things about Brad and his techniques that I didn't like at all. Including the fact that my dogs are now afraid of me after using his techniques for about a week. I think there's a lot in his book he left out that unfortunately can be very bad for the dogs. I'm not saying he did it intentionally, but I learned recently that dogs barking is not always bad, it is actually a good thing and should be praised, excessive barking is bad however. Which wasn't said in his book, he just said the dogs need to be correct under the jaw when they bark, or put in time out etc.

I am not at all dismissing his techniques completely, I believe there are many things he teaches that are very good. So I have decided to read up on many different types of dog training techniques, and hopefully will create a hybrid of all the training techniques I learn.

I hope you guys also take Brads training with an open mind and find out which type of training works best for you and your dogs. And know his training is not the only type of training that works. I am not bashing, just trying to inform.

L Robert L,

Well I am the one with the barking 12 dogs,

I had a man come out to my home from the City of Calgary and he showed me what works, and it did.

I stopped yelling at them when they were barking, and i got to the door before the dogs. My yelling made the dogs think i was joining in on the barking...and it made sense.

I also filled a used water bottle with coins and I shake it when i need their attention.

My husband also rolled up a newspaper and duct taped it for me and I smack my hand with it.

I don't think you should smack small dogs i think they break a little to easy.

Plus i would start walking only one dog at a time and when each one becomes more confident then I would start walking both.

I think my dogs feed off of each other's emotions and fears.

I still have one that barks and i think it is just her personality, the other 7 are doind well.

Also keep in mind little dogs are more yappy than big ones and small dogs are also harder to train.

Hello L Robert L,

I own three small dogs which don't bark at all, well unless someone is close to my door, i own two Jack Russell's and now a Chi which are good little dogs, hey Kim, i have also done the rolled up newspaper and bottles with pennies as well i find it does work, but i have also used my hands like clap them and said, 'enough" i agree that no one should have to smack or hit a dog of any size. Also and i have told Kim this you could play dog noises or any for that matter on your computer to get the dogs to stop barking by clapping your hands or shake the penny bottle and say enough every time they go to bark. These are just little things that i have used and have worked for me. I also agree with L Robert L that excessive barking is bad however, some barking is good it's always good to know when someone is close to your home and they are letting you know that. The things i have listed above was when my dogs would none stop barking and this was what i did to get them to stop and it's work well for me, everyone has their own training methods, but we can all learn through others on what has worked and what has not worked.

Peace !!!!!

Its driving me nuts!!!!...any other suggestions??? He's on the most part, very disiplined. just not with this issue. maybe he's bored??...I don't know...

Heidi,

Just a suggestion, I've seen it work but doesn't mean it will for all dogs but....
Put your dog on the leash. Put the cats in their crates/carrying cases. Now everyone is safe.
Work (walk, sit) your dog around the crates. Correct every time he fixates. End the exercise ONLY once he's calmed down (will sit or lie down near the crates without fixating).
Took my friend 3 weeks working 30-45 minutes EACH day.
The cats became accustomed to the dog and vice versa.

Brad I have a question for you about Hybrids, I heard Hybrids were the most intelligent dogs anyone could pick to bring into their life and homes. But you dont invite a pure wolf pup into your home cause their natural instinct will kick in and take off maybe worse. So to my question do you beleive a 75% Hybrid would be a great dog for an active younger family with a fenced in backyard, also myself I cant work no more do to Epielsy so I want help to protect my family if ever needed, also I love Hybrids.

LRoberetL, I want to address something you said about your dogs now being afraid of you. if you are working them properly, they should react to you in a certain way. but you must project confidence in yourself to them.
it sounds to me (and I'm only guessing here, based on things I have seen on the show) that your dogs may be be trying to manipulate you with guilt. I am very strict with my dogs, and far from being frightened of me, they trust me completely. they know that when I tell them to "hustle" I mean RIGHT NOW, and I have a reason. they're at my feet in seconds.
if your dogs are used to being in charge, and you suddenly start changing things, and being the boss, the can react in many ways. acting frightened, or depressed is one way that they will attempt to maintain their positions as your "boss". keep the training consistent. and if you're having issues with them, see if you can find one of Brads CETs in your area. there's a place on his web page (www.bradpattison.com) where you can ask about that. you sound like you could use some support.
as for the "pink" on this web page, remember that Slice is geared itself towards women. (I can think of more appropriate methods for Brads show, but I'll watch it where ever it is.
good luck with training your dogs. it's worth it.

UGH

I just cut/pasted ALL YOUR INFO for this business.

Woke up this a.m. and thought the dog was left alone etc.....he has been barking since 9:15am and it is NOW 10:24am

I then walked around the neighbourhood and figured out this dog is barking as he is in a PET GROOMING PLACE!

I called them and the Business Owner stated she couldn't get him to STOP. SO I went to the Slice Network, found info on BRAD and cut/pasted how to contact him and to give the info to the DOG OWNER.

Wow. I have never seen or heard this before

I mean sure dogs get scared if they have their nails clipped etc....they get nervous and try to get away, but I have never heard of a doggie barking for over an hour......?

Thanks

Just Moi
