Ask An Expert: Tommy, I'm active, but I still have problem areas. Please help!

Q: My name is Krystina and I'm 15 years old. I currently do cheerleading twice a week for roughly 5 hours a week, but I'm also enrolled in Jiu-jitsu (martial arts) which I do 2-3 times a week for about 4-6 hours per week. But also my school offers dance which I am also currently taking through school which is an hour per day. Overall I workout for approximately 14 hours per week. But I still have fat around my stomach area which I am most concerned about. I have lost some weight around my stomach area but for me it's not enough. My boyfriend has told me I don't need to lose weight, I just need to tone up. I almost quit cheerleading this year because we have to wear the crop tops, and the skirts which will show my mid section, which I am most self conscious about. I was just wondering if you have any suggestions or comments for me. I would appreciate any criticism and comments that you could give me.

Ask An Expert: Can I still work out while I have a cold or should I opt to spend a few days in rest, to get better?

For about a month now, I’ve been enjoying the effects of my new fitness plan. I’ve a personal trainer who pushes me to my limits and I am seeing wonderful results. I’ve been eating really healthily and it has definitely become a lifestyle change for me. But what can I do when I get sick? Like right now, for example, I have a cold. Can I still work out while I have a cold, or should I opt to spend a few days in rest, to get better? Is it true what they say: Sweat it out? Or does this simply delay your recovery? Thanks so much, Tommy!

Q: Hi Tommy. I'm 37 years old and have some hormonal issues. I have been trying for 3 years now to lose 10-15 pounds. I was told by my doctor that I should weigh a lot more but because I workout 5-6 times a week I don't. Thank God for that but I really want to lose my excess weight. Any advice you may have would be great. I feel extremely frustrated and am losing hope. I am willing to do the work but need the advice.

Countdown to Running a Half-Marathon: Nutrition

This week I wanted to focus on nutrition, specifically when training for a race/athletic event such as a half-marathon. Since I'm no expert on nutrition I went to someone who is for the answers to my questions - Registered Dietician Jaclyn Pritchard.

Countdown to Running a Half-Marathon: Treadmill vs. Running Outside

When I started running back in March, I started running outside. I was tired of being indoors all winter. I have run on the treadmill in the past, and I quickly learned running outside is definitely different from the treadmill.

Ask an Expert: Maria, I love juice! Is there a type that I could sneak in every now and then?

I feel like I eat well and with good portion control, but my question is about juice. I love juice, but I know that it is not good because of the sugar. I drink tons of water already and 1% milk, but is there a type of juice that is lower in sugar or better for you that I could sneak in every now and then?

Countdown to Running a Half-Marathon: Motivation

It was a drab spring day. The early days of spring when the weather is still cool and the trees are still bare, cloudy. At the time I was working a job where my schedule was all over the place. Nights, days, weekends. I never exercised. I haven't been much of a workout/athletic type person my whole life, excluding one year in 2nd-year university when I taught myself how to be a strong front-crawler in the pool. I actually got quite good at it and was swimming lengths for up to 40 minutes some days.

Ask an Expert: Tommy, I’m starting college and I love fast food!

Hey Tommy, I’m starting college and with all the stress going on I have gained weight. I would love to lose 10-15 pounds so I can get to my ideal weight and how I was before I started college. The problem is I have no motivation and eating right is hard.

Healthy Summer Eating

Summer is here, which means patios, BBQs, cold beer, and ice cream. It’s a time for vacation but it doesn’t necessarily mean vacation from your diet. Here are my top 10 tips you should keep in mind this summer while spending time at the cottage or just socializing with friends.

Snack Attack!

It’s 3 p.m. and you are starting to hit that brick wall. Your computer screen is starting to blur. Your mind is wandering. You could definitely go for something sweet… maybe.something like a scone, or a Vente Mocha from Starbucks. Sound familiar? Good nutrition and healthy snacking are very important factors in controlling afternoon slumps.

Summertime Shape-Up

As loyal X-Weighted fans anxiously await the return of the show to our fall schedule, we have some valuable advice from the host, Paul Plakas. I had the opportunity to ask him a couple of questions recently that I’ve seen posted both on slice.ca and socially. Most people are curious about how they can make changes that will impact their lives in a positive way.

Work Your Body

Recently, I asked Paul Plakas, host of X-Weighted, about the basics of starting a weight loss/workout plan and how to lose that booty when you’ve already lost some weight.

Travel Is Therapy

This is the time of year where we let down our hair, do our favourite summer activities, and relax. “Vacation” can mean different things to different people: a stress-relieving Caribbean retreat during our dreary winter, looking for inspiration by volunteering overseas, or an exciting trip to the Rockies, there are a lot of ways to unwind.

Shoe Collection = Very Sore Feet

Today women make a lot of impulsive purchases. I have a few collections at home: Purses (can’t have too many of those), CDs and DVDs, and my personal favourite – shoes. With so many varieties to choose from, how can we have sore feet? By now, you would think that shoe manufacturers would have their arch supports down to an art.

Quench Your Thirst With Fuze!

If you’ve been looking around the refreshment aisle of the supermarket or convenience store, you may have noticed a new line of drinks, just in time for summer.
