Ask an Expert: Brad, our bulldog is destroying our house! Help!

Hi Brad! We are newlyweds with an adorable old english bulldog named Rani. She is super sweet, cute, and loves attention and affection. Unfortunately those same qualities are what is causing the problems. Because she gets so much attention and love from us, when other dogs come around she becomes incredibly defensive and although she plays with them she plays very rough with other dogs and has even made my sister's dog bleed....

Ask an Expert: Brad, my older dog is getting grumpy!

Question: I have had two cocker spaniels now for 12 years. My female has always been vocal (squeaks when she is happy and makes throaty noises when unhappy, like a moan/growl).

Ask an Expert: Brad, what should I do about an aggressive dog owner?

Hello, My question is how to deal with an out-of-control dog owner at dog parks. Recently while at the dog park with my 13-month-old black lab, a woman with her full-grown Bernese Mountain dog went completely ballistic at me while our dogs were playing together.

Ask an Expert: Brad, my puppy needs training!

Hi Brad, I have a soon to be eight-month-old Standard Poodle. From watching your show, I know I have to take the role as Alpha; however, I'm not quite sure I have done that.

Ask an Expert: Brad, my dog is afraid of noises!

I have a rescue now for over a year. He is a great dog, reasonably obedient, and it was a fairly easy to erase his aggressive behavior when I got him. (He would snap at any dog that came near him.) He now sees me as alpha (working on my girlfriend. He listens to her, but behaves a little more like she's a pack mate instead of an alpha.)

Ask An Expert: Brad, Why Does My Dog Misbehave When Other Dogs Are Around?

Q: Hello, I enjoy watching your show. My dog is 2 years old and everytime i take him for a walk, once he sees another dog or sometimes people he starts to bark loudly and get out of control and it is embarassing. Not sure of what I can do. He has already gone to dog school.

Ask An Expert: Brad, I Have A Dog That Jumps Up! Please Help!

Q: Dear Brad, I have a three year old Boston Terrier who always jumps up on hind legs on peoples legs when meeting or greeting them. How can I stop this behavior? Can you help me please?

Ask An Expert: Brad, How Can We Get Our Puppy To Not "Go" In The House?

Q: Hello, I have a one year old Morkie (Maltese/Yorkie) and she is very impatient. When we first got her, she was bouncing off the walls, but has since calmed down as we walk her about 1 1/2 hours a day. My question is when she needs to go to the bathroom if you are not at the door right away and I mean in about a minute, she won't wait.

Ask An Expert: Brad, Should I Be Running With Our Boxer?

Hi Brad, what is a good breed to run with? We have a boxer and my boyfriend says that it's okay to run with him but I have heard differently. What is your thought on this?

Ask An Expert: Brad, Should I Train My Dog With Treats?

Q: Why do you say dog treats are bad for training your dog? We have watched all of your shows and you never use a treat, but you always have success and we can't get the same success as you do. Please help!

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Is Having Sneezing Attacks!

Q: Brad how concerned should I be about my dog having sneezing attacks?

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Puppy Barks, Bites & Causes Trouble At Home!

Q: I've had my puppy, Bella, for a few weeks now, and she is chaotic. She doesn't listen at all and she barks and bites whenever I tell her "no". She's okay with going to the bathroom, she will go outside. I take her for walks, I let her run around the back yard with me. But she just runs around the house back and forth, no matter how much I do things with her. It's causing fights at home with my parents because they're tired of their stuff being destroyed (she eats everything).

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Ignores Me In Certain Situations! Please Help!

Q: Hey Brad! You're an amazing trainer! My puppy (also Bella) is doing great thanks to your show. She is a 3 month old German Shepard and can already do a sit/stay, paw, and lay down. She doesn't even bark when visitors come knocking. I do however, need some help with the "Come" command if she’s in the sit/stay. No problem except for if she’s playing or distracted she ignores me help!

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Is Very Agressive! Please Help!

Q: Brad, my 4 yr old shih-tzu is a nightmare! Very, very aggressive! I'm really worried he will bite one of my children's friends.

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Is Very Destructive During My Absence. Please Help!

Q: Brad, my dog is very destructive when we’re leaving him during the day. I would hate to crate train him, but at the same time, I have heard positive things about doing this. What is your view about crate training dogs and would you recommend it?

Ask An Expert: Brad, Is It Necessary To Dress Up The Pooch?

Q: Brad, is it really necessary to fall into the routine of dressing up the pooch for a walk? We have a boston terrier and I don’t really want to dress her up like a doll for a walk. What should I buy so I can walk her in the winter and she would be comfortable?

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Sheds A Lot! Please Help!

Q: Hi Brad, I have a dog that sheds a lot with the seasons. Is there anything we can do to help groom him so he’s not shedding all over my furniture? He’s a Golden Retriever.

Ask An Expert: Brad, I Can't Leave The House Without The Dog!

Q: Hi brad I adopted a dog form the local SPCA - this dog has been abandoned in the past. He has a very good temperment and is learning to obey my commands. The problem is that I can’t leave him home alone without him tearing at the door. I have been trying different exercises such as leaving him for short periods and coming back and also a lot of walks, but his progress does not seem to be getting better.

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Is Prone To Ear Infections! Any Advice?

Q: Brad, our Golden Retriever loves to swim at the cottage, but sometimes ends up with a nasty ear infection after. Are there any products or advice you can give us to help us control these infections? Maybe there’s some preventative maintenance that we can do to prevent this from happening.

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Eats Way Too Quickly!

Q: What is the best way to slow my dog down with food. I am moving him over to raw soon but right now he eats orijen. He is a 3 year old amarican eskimo and he just swallows it all. I am afraid when i switch him to raw, he may choke if he does that.

Ask An Expert: Brad, What Are The Best/Worst Dog Toys?

Q: Brad, there’s tons of toys for dogs out there. Could you make suggestions on the best/worst dog toys? We don’t want our dog to become sick/swallow anything that could harm him. He’s a German Sheppard and loves to play rough with toys.

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Drinks From The Toilet. Please Help!

Q: Brad, our dog has come into the habit of drinking from the toilet, and I'd love to get him out of the habit through training. Would you know of any training methods you would suggest to break him from the habit? I know leaving the toilet lid closed is one thing, but our guests forget to close it when they're done. I'd rather eliminate the habit.

Ask An Expert: Brad, What's The Best Collar For My New Dog?

Q: Hi there Brad, there are so many different collars and harnesses out there for dogs and as we have just become owners to a puppy for the first time, we'd love to have the best for him. Do you have any advice on what type of collars or harness you would recommend for a Boston Terrier pup? Thanks, Tom

Ask An Expert: Brad, How Can I Keep My Dog Healthy/Happy Outdoors In The Heat?

Q: Brad, right now we’re going through some pretty hot weather. Would you be able to give me some pointers on how to keep the pooch happy and healthy while spending time outdoors? It’s summer and I love to spend time outside, but I don’t want it to be too much for him.

Ask An Expert: Brad, Our Dogs Destroy Everything! Please Help!

Q: Hello Brad! I have two lab/cross whom my family and I love very much. Both dogs are extremely affectionate and very gentle and kind to our daughter Lily, who is 8 months. They are both trained to use the washroom outside as well. The problem we are having with our dogs is that they are very needy. They destroy the house when we leave them for any amount of time (literally 10 minutes will do it). I am a stay at home mom so this usually isn't an issue until we need to do groceries or want to visit family. Do you have any advice?

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Won't Stop Licking Everything!

Q: Hi Brad!! I love your show and have truly been inspired at your methods for training dogs. I do have a quick question though. I have a 4 year old Black Lab and our main problem with her is that she licks everything!! Recently she has started licking the bottom of her paws so much that two of them have become raw and bloody. How would you suggest stopping this? Thanks so much, Stephanie R

Ask An Expert: Brad, I Need Help With My Puppy!

Q: I have a couple questions for you thought when your doing doggy umbilical cord how long should your leash be? My dog has gas no matter what dog food I feed it what can I do? I take her for a 2 to 3 hour walk everyday and play inside as well and has lots of association with other dogs, but she still has tons of energy, she is only six months will it get better? Lola is a boxer-collie cross could this just be the mix?

Ask An Expert: Brad, I'm Getting A Puppy. Any Tips?

Q: I'm getting a new puppy and before I do I want to make sure what I'm doing. I've been looking up how to potty train a puppy and most advice is to lock him up while I'm sleeping. This makes perfect sense, however I want my puppy to get in the habit of wanting to sleep on the bed with me and be my constant companion. Is there another way to train him at night besides locking him up?

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Needs Help Coping With Baby's Arrival!

Q: Hi Brad. I have a 5 year old chocolate lab, Lucy, she is well behaved and fairly well mannered, however we now have a 6 month old baby in the home. Prior to the baby arriving, I was the one who provided the majority of the walking/caregiving of Lucy, walking her at least twice a day, for over an hour each walk, plus going to the off leash park at least twice on weekends, sometimes during the week. Now she seems depressed, sleeping most of the time, laying in front of the window almost yearning to be outside.

Ask An Expert: Brad, Any Advice For The Adoption Of A Deaf Puppy?

Q: Hi Brad,My husband and I are considering adopting a 10 month old great pyrenes who was born deaf. We are already the owners of a very passive and loving chocolate lab who will be 6 this June. We were wondering if you had any advice to offer to assist in the training. I have some experience with this as I had a husky that I rescued from a sled runner who was also very deaf. Any help you could offer us to help us in our decision would be very much appreciated.

Ask An Expert: Brad, How Do I Get My Dog To Listen To Me?

Q: Brad, my boyfriend, Chris, got me a flat coat retriever about a year ago named Rex. Rex has gone to training classes and passed both classes. Rex is rather over excited dog. He lives to jump on people and use them as a chew toy. What can Chris and myself do to get Rex to listen to us?

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Puppy Is Chewing Everything!

Q: Hi Brad, I love your show. We just got a puppy(***-a-poo), he is 9 weeks old. He seems to be biting on everything, like shoes, socks, bottom of pants, shoelaces, basically anything. He also likes to bite or nip at my kids(they are 7 and 9) more than at me or my wife. What can I do to stop this from escalating?

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Puppy Has Bad Manners!

Q: We have a 5 month old terrier mix puppy and she is sweet but we are having some problems with jumping up, mouthing, and really rough play. How can we get her to stop these things because I'm just not comfortable having her around my nieces and nephews. Jez is a good dog and I just want her to be the best pup she can be.

Brad Pattison Unleashed!

As a popular animal advocate, Brad Pattison helps families in every episode of At The End Of My Leash build better bonds with their canine companions. Behaviour that seems almost natural to humans quickly becomes an issue as canines are not meant to become babies, dolls or identified as children. This leads to frustration, anger and an ultimatum that if the unwanted behaviour of these dogs doesn’t change, then the dog will have to go.

Ask An Expert: Brad, Our Dog Pulls When Walking. Please Help!

Q: We have a black lab / Newfoundland cross. She is probably the best dog we've ever had. We all love her she is great when we open the door she doesn't run out, she doesn't go on furniture, she comes when you call her, and she is the most friendliest dog I’ve ever had or met. But the only thing we would change is that we notice when we walk she pulls a bit ahead and when we get her to stop that she pulls to the side. It’s so hard to walk her even though we love to!

Ask An Expert: Brad, We Are Losing Our Dog Today. Please Help!

Q: Dear Brad: We are losing our beautiful boy, an Aussie, Nelson, today. He is leaving us with many happy memories. We are concerned with how Max his brother will respond and how to help him deal with his grief. Max is the alpha of the two. What should we do?

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Has A Nurturing Behaviour Issue!

Q: Hi Brad! First off, I love your show. I have a border collie/ sheppard cross dog her name is Onyx. We havent had her spayed yet for she has a inverted vulva and the vet has recommended us to wait for it might correct itself. The weirdest thing has happened this weekend. I had a bag of teddy bears on my floor of my room. She has taken every bear out of the bag and put them on my bed and when I walk her, she is constantly crying. What can I do about this?

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Nips And Mom Gets Upset!

Q: Please help, my mom is very controlling and she tells me how to train my dog. At the moment, my dog (8 months) is nipping and my mom keeps telling me that my dog is biting and it will become more of a biter and I should have it put down. This breaks my heart and I need to know if I have a dog that should be put to sleep.

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Has Behaviour Issues!

Hi there Brad: I would like your advice on a couple of problems I have with my 18 month old SC Wheaton (Tia), but first I would like to say how much I enjoy 'The End of my Leash'. Also I took part in your Vancouver workshop last fall and have your training manual.

Ask An Expert: Brad, We Can't Handle Our Dog's Behaviour!

Q: When we are out, Jax is more aggressive with other dogs and loves to hump them boy or girl, mostly boy. When people are around he gets too excited and starts to nip and jump up. I do not know how to stop this behaviour.

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Won't Stop Pooping In The House!

Q: Hi Brad, my dog has huge issues peeing and pooping in the house, she was a rescue from another home and we assume she is pee pad trained because she only goes to the bathroom on paper. A couple of questions I have about this pooping and peeing would be: Does the dog go to the bathroom outside?????? If so then this is more then likely a peepee pad issue from being trained indoors.

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Doesn't Like One Particular Dog!

Ask An Expert: Brad, We Want To Start Training Our New Puppy!

Q: We are new owners to a puppy and want to start training him. What would you recommend to be the most important thing to start training him on?

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Won't Walk While We're Out!

Q: Hi Brad, I have a 4 month old Westie who is having trouble going on walks. She doesn't seem to be bothered by the leash, however, she does the opposite of pulling on the lead. She will sit or lie down and not want to walk. I have tried a few times to walk with her without allowing her to stop, however, I stopped this after 3 of 4 paws were bleeding. She is improving and no longer shivers when we start out on walks. She walks forward when she meets people and stops when frightened. I am working under the assumption that once she consistently walks forward we can work with the umbilical. I would appreciate any advice! ~ Sandy

Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Won't Eat While We're On Vacation

Q: Brad, I have a nine year old yorkie cross who has been babysat by a family member in our house when we go on holiday. This is no longer possible and when he spent a few days at my daughter's house, he would not eat. We have a holiday coming up soon and am very worried that he won't eat while we are gone and this time it's for two weeks. What can I do to ensure this won’t happen?
