Style Thursdays: Would You Wear Couples Shirts?
Annyong Haseo (that's "hello" in Korean) slice.ca readers! Unfortunately (no offense), I had to come home from Asia and return to real life. And now my friends, family, coworkers and you guys have the pleasure of hearing/reading/seeing all about my trip — and I will share all of this at any and every given opportunity. My first slice of Asian life comes courtesy of the lovebirds in South Korea.
According to a blog called YoStart, qínglzhuang is "a trend in China and Korea whereby a couple or lovers will wear matching, nearly identical clothing." I had heard a little about couples tshirts (the ones above from The Couple Shop) from my sister and her boyfriend who are teaching English in Korea but had no idea quite how popular the trend is. I would guess that for every five couples I saw, one was clad in matching clothing — that's right. It's not just tshirts! There are hoodies, button-up shirts and even matchy jeans or khakis and sneakers. The trend was even more prevalent in Jeju. Often called "Korea's Hawaii," Jeju is absolutely gorgeous and is one of Asia's top honeymoon destinations so the island is rife with couples and newlyweds eager to demonstrate their love.
While I'll admit that I'm amused by the tshirts that point to each other or have images that continue from one to the other, I would be embarassed to walk down the street in Canada, Korea or anywhere else dressed just like my boyfriend. Not only do I not feel it necessary to illustrate my relationship for the world, I wonder just how much effort is involved? How often do these couples stand in front of their closet debating the day's outfit?
What do you think? Would you and your significant other ever wear matching outfits or tshirts?
