Ask An Expert: Jason Lee's Top 10 Ways to Take Care of Your Hair This Summer
Q: Jason, Can you give me some advice on how to take care of my hair in the summer?
A: Here is my Top 10 List of Do's and Don'ts for this summer:
1) DO put low lights in your bleached out blonde. Just because you go to the cottage doesn't mean you can let blonde go too blonde. Try putting in some natural warm low lights to break up overly lightened hair.
2) DO NOT stress your curls this summer. Pick up a great leave in curl cream that will revitalize your curls and be proud of your natural wave.
3) DO wear your hair up in a messy ballerina bun. The latest look has been worn by celebs and cool girls everywhere. This is 2010's prettiest summer trend.
4) DO NOT swim in chlorine if you want to protect your hair. Swimming in pools may be great for staying in shape and keeping cool, but the chlorine will build up on your ends and wreak havoc. If after you've been swimming in a pool and you notice your ends becoming sticky or hard to comb out, you have chlorine build up!
5) DO buy swimmer's shampoo or what's called a clarifying shampoo if you swim a lot. This type of shampoo will help you remove the chlorine build up should you not listen to DO NOT #4.
6) DO let your roots grow wild! The hottest trend this year will continue to be the Sarah Jessica Parker inspired dark roots/light ends hair colour! Wear your hair wavy and wear it confidently!!
7) DO wear your hair in a braid. When you jump out of the shower or pool or lake and you need a quick easy style, just braid your hair and secure it with a gentle hair elastic. Once your hair dries, take the braid out and you will achieve great beachy waves like Kate Hudson. The bigger the braid, the softer the wave.
8) DO NOT get too close to an open fire!!! BBQ's, bonfires, and candles are all wonderful parts of summer fun, but nothing is worse than getting your hair caught on fire if you get too close. I can't tell you how many clients have told me that they've been too close to an open flame and they have burnt sections out of their hair.
9) DO put your hair up in soft waves that aren't too contrived. Weddings and special events are great opportunities to show off your beautiful face and wearing your hair softly pinned up is a great option for most.
10) DO stay on top of your hair this summer. While it's alright to extend the visits to the salon through these months, it's still important to always revitalize your reds, touch up your blonde and make sure your sexy chocolate brown stays shiny and beautiful! Xoxo
