Ask An Expert: Jason, What Age Should I Let My Daughter Dye Her Hair?

Q: Jason, at what age is it okay for my daughter to start dying her hair? ~ Kate

A: Lourdes Leon says in her latest blog for her "Material Girl" clothing line that her mom, Madonna, is letting her dye her hair when she turns 14 this fall.

Little Maddox Jolie Pitt was definitely the coolest kid on the playground when his mama Angelina let him bleach out his mohawk a few years back.

While I bleached my hair for the first time at my high school prom, prior to that, I experimented with all kinds of God awful colours from a box starting probably when I was around 12 years old.

How young is too young to start 'dying' your hair?  While there isn't an exact age, most people would agree that it might be a good idea to hold off until at least the ages of 13-14 years old.  At that point, both the hair and scalp are at a point where they can somewhat endure the wrath of colouring and/or highlighting.  I would also suggest that if you decide to let your child colour their hair at a younger age, start with something either off the scalp (foil highlights) or use gloss colours or natural colours which won't be as harsh.

While it's probably a little presumptuous for me to suggest this (as I don't have kids myself), I would think it's also important for us to look at what the motive is behind the child's decision to colour their hair.  Is it for artistic self expression and experimentation with their appearances?  Or, is it because they feel insecure and think having blonde hair is going to make them attractive to the opposite sex?  This is where your opinion really matters.  This is the time to teach your kids that they are beautiful as they are and colouring/highlighting should really only enhance their personal self-expression.

So whether you are like Madonna who makes Lola wait until she's 14, or Angelina Jolie's Maddox aka 'the coolest kid on the block', remember that you're the parent and your daughter will have her entire life ahead of her to colour her hair!  Good luck. xoxo
