Ask An Expert: Brad, My Dog Won't Stop Pooping In The House!
Q: Hi Brad, my dog has huge issues peeing and pooping in the house, she was a rescue from another home and we assume she is pee pad trained because she only goes to the bathroom on paper. A couple of questions I have about this pooping and peeing would be: Does the dog go to the bathroom outside?????? If so then this is more then likely a peepee pad issue from being trained indoors.
A: The first thing to start with will be to keep the floor clear of any papers. The second thing would be to start taking the dog outside for longer walks and more stimulation. Lastly, when your dog makes an error doing its business in the house, you will need to assess a couple things:
Did you aid in the dog doing business in the home because you did not full fill your obligation taking the dog out to do the business outdoors. It will not be fair to the dog to get all annoyed if you failed to take the dog out.
This is a learned behaviour from your dog to do business indoors. That means it will need to be taught a new expectation and dissolve the old teachings. This may take a day or a few weeks. Work towards a win-win situation.
If the dog has been out for a walk and then comes in the home to pee or poop, then you will have to firmly discipline your dog with a firm voice and place the dog in time-out. Maybe at the front door or in the hallway, but not in the crate or the bedroom.
