He Said, She Said: The Diva is Back!

It's the classic Hollywood story: boy-band bad boy meets international pop star girl. Boy marries girl and strangely name their daughter the female equivalent of the boy's first name. Boy and girl proceed to have many publicized domestic fights. Boy and girl engage in drug use and a series of unlawful acts while maintaining their love for each other. Boy and girl finally divorce. Girl becomes more healthy and stages massive musical comeback. Oh the glamourous lives of the rich and famous!

The Ultimate "Ladies" Night Out

Carrie Bradshaw once said the gay best friend is the single gal's best accessory. If this is true, then the drag show is a bachelorette's best form of entertainment.

Rant #143: Please DO Stop the (Crap) Music

A sign of aging? Forget those wrinkles or the fact your knee cracks every time you stand up; for me it’s all about the music. I’ve been aware for some time that I might not be the target market for Muchmusic or any of the #1 hit music radio stations as I once was. My values and life experiences have certainly affected my taste in art and music meaning I don’t fall for the same old, 3 minute pop song that I used to.

This Land is Your Land, This Land is My Land...

The summer is for many things: picnics in the park, festivals galore, the wedding season. One of my favourite summer activities is the "weekend exploration" (also known as the "weekend getaway") whereby us city slickers exit the confines of our lovely metropolis and head to cottage country or on a road trip to a nearby town or quaint village. I'm surely not alone in this as evidenced by the frustrating highway traffic as mass exodus from the city usually begins Friday evening and extends until Saturday afternoon. Either way, it's worth it...

Toronto is Proud to be Sponsored

One of Canada's largest and most diverse arts & culture festivals? Check. A week long celebration of diversity and acceptance? Check. 1 million in attendance? Check. There's no debate, Toronto's Pride Week 2009 was a huge local and international success.

David Beckham for Armani Underwear

David Beckham continues to expand the Beckham empire by starring in the most recent Armani underwear ad campaign. These new images (see below) feature David in a variety of stylized and moody poses that attempt to elevate this ad campaign from trite underwear advertising to "fashion imagery as art." I appreciate the high fashion aesthetic that this ad campaign is trying to convey, but I'm not sure if I find David Beckham convincing as a high fashion or art model. When I think of David Beckham, "soccer star" instantly pops into my mind and I really don't find any of his forays into fashion believable. I definitely wouldn't run out and buy these underwear pieces just because David Beckham is wearing them in these ads, but I will admit that he looks handsome in these ads and I am well aware of Armani underwear now because David Beckham was in this ad campaign.

An Open Letter to Shower Organizers

Dear Ms. Organization, It's that time of year again! I know you're super busy planning the menu, writing out instructions for the games we're going to play, and gathering a series of memories to embarrass the bride with, but I write to you on behalf of the attendees to your event.

My Slice Show Obsession

I have a confession to make. I have a very serious obsession (not of the Beyonce, Ali Larter variety) with a show on Slice. No, this is not a shameless plug for our beloved network, I truly cannot call my day complete without seeing at least one episode of the popular show, Til’ Debt Do Us Part.

A Present Good Enough for Mom...

This time of year is always challenging to me. I love my mother very much, but the thought of buying a gift for her is a bit daunting. I'm not sure if your mother is anything like this, but when faced with the question "What would you like for Mother's Day?", the most common response I receive is "Oh, nothing sweetheart" or "Whatever you like".

Are YOU a fan of Susan Boyle?

Unless you've been under rock, covered in moss, weighed down by 1,000 tonnes of dirt for the past couple weeks, then you will be familiar with Susan Boyle. Her audition on Britain's Got Talent (think England's American Idol but not just for singers) has turned into a viral video sensation with online users enjoying Boyle's rendition of I Dreamed a Dream from the musical Les Miserables over 25 million times.

You = Superhero

With a huge blockbuster like Watchmen opening this past weekend along with the success of The Dark Knight and Ironman in 2008, superheroes are ruling Hollywood. But let’s be real – I think we all know that you and I could kick some serious ass, at least for a day or two.

He Said, She Said: Oscar Fashions

Yes, I was one of the masses glued to my television on Sunday night to watch the 81st Annual Oscars. But let’s be real – my motivation was not to “celebrate the best that film has to offer”, but really to yell at glamazons from Hollywood and judge them solely based on their selection of gown, tuxedo, diamonds, and pumps.

Awards Shows = Crazy Celebrity Collaborations

If you can make it through the bad jokes and five hour-long telecasts, awards season can be an entertainment addict’s dream. There’s the fashion, the pre-show interviews and my favourite pastime, peeking at who’s taking their relationship public on the red carpet. Once you get past the preamble, some of the best collaborations are born on the stages of these extravagant events.

What's your Recession Vice?

Have you heard? Times are tough, we’re entering a recession, the economy is performing poorly, and like me, I’m sure you’re reminded of all of the above on a daily basis. To that end, I’ve been thinking about the best ways to cut corners, but this quickly turned into an internal debate about what I couldn’t live without.

The Return of the Runway

You dream about it. You wonder what will be different. You hope the parts you loved most will remain the same. You plan a viewing party with friends who enjoy your guilty pleasure just as much as you do. Then, you cozy into your favourite spot on the couch with a beverage in one hand and the remote in the other. Nothing is better than your favourite television show returning to air.

Tips for a Charlie Brown Christmas Tree

I love the holidays. I really do. I don’t feel pressure or stress, I simply feel the need to celebrate and enjoy a more festive time of year with everyone around me. One of my favourite holiday traditions is the classic tree trimming with a little twist. At the end of it all, my goal is to have a cute, Charlie Brown Christmas tree sparkling in my living room.

Vive le Beaujolais!

When I was younger, wine was usually a means to an end or something I would gulp ungracefully at the dinner table. While I don’t profess to be a sommelier, I’ve certainly increased my interest and love of white, red, or rose from around the world.

Beyonce Knowles: The Demise of Feminism.

Please note the period at the end of this title. No question mark, no more than one period, no malpunctuation. This is not what Carrie Bradshaw would call a “hostile period”, it just… is.

Time to Getaway

I have a very sad announcement: it would seem that winter has arrived early to Canada. I certainly appreciate the snow and all the fun that can come with it, however last week when I was digging out my winter jacket and mittens, I became slightly depressed and little in denial – I couldn’t believe it was only October!

Toronto Fashion Week Day Two - David Dixon

This former Alfred Sung apprentice was the talk of the night and certainly had the most theatrical show of the evening. David Dixon brought artistry to his signature style of “quiet elegance”.

Toronto Fashion Week Day Two - Bustle

I have a confession to make: male models scare the bejesus out of me. Maybe it’s because males being prettier than females is somewhat startling, or perhaps it’s their shockingly small frames. Either way, I can’t help but replay the Zoolander scene where all of Ben Stiller’s male model roommates spray gasoline unknowingly at each other while “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” unsubtly blares from their Jeep.

Toronto Fashion Week Day Two - Joeffer Caoc

FDCC veteran and three time Canadian Designer of the Year Joeffer Caoc is no rookie. Caoc is usually a huge crowd favourite and certainly deserves praise with his beautiful fabrics, flawless seams, and flowing feminine designs.

Toronto Fashion Week Day Two - Jason Meyers

While I’m no Fashion Week virgin, the idea of attending Toronto Fashion Week was somewhat daunting. I may be sassy, but that does not include stuck up or girly. I love looking at runway shows for creativity and inspiration, and if raggedy ole’ me can take away one trick or treat from a show, then I consider my observation a success.

What does your Freebie Five say about you?

I’ve never been a fan of playing games in a relationship or in the pursuit of a relationship. Safe to say, there are several dangerous games to be played amongst couples but why not get your jollies (if games are your thing) with a little harmless exercise.

The Politics of Looking Good

If you ever just barely glance at the news these days, then it’s not news to you that we are in the midst of Election frenzy. Both Canada and the United States are holding very timely and important federal elections this fall, and it’s safe to say the candidates are pulling out all the stops.

A Suit That Fits!

Allow me to introduce myself... my name is Sassy Sailor and I'm the newest member of the slice.ca team. I must warn you, I tend to be more "rant" and a little less "rave," but I swear I'm a very positive person! Let the blog cherry-popping commence...
